You need to purchase skill boxes in more combat professions. As you buy more boxes like novice (insert elite comabt prof here) you're CL will go up. If you are spending time crafting or entrertaining, you won't be increasing your combat skills thus you won't gain anymore CL.

the fix . . . keep shooting . . .keep swinging and keep buying more skill boxes in the various (or specialize in one) combat professions.

Probably you are talking about combat level (the thing in the topleft corner of the screen). You need to increase it to use better weapons and to put on armour. You can increase your combat level by gaining skills. Combat skills like marksman skills, brawler skills and other skills. You cant increase your combat level if you are an artisan or a entertainer, or the guys likethose who hide behind the corner when you are doing all the work. The maximum combat level is 80.
