Thread: Thunderheart, why did you lie about the unlocking mechanism changing?

Initially with the old system, you had to unlock 5 hidden master boxes. As the number of Jedi increased on the servers, we increased the required number of hidden boxes. As the number increased, people were completing more and more professions to hit the hidden requirements. Although we will not be giving specific credit for the total number of professions ground, we will be giving credit for how many of the required hidden master boxes you completed.

- i couldn't find the post where you stated (allow me to paraphrase) "the # of professions hasn't changed, but the community may be missing one crucial aspect."

here's a post from Garva also saying there was no change:

http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=jedi&message.id=276010

Is the one crucial aspect the community missed your propensity to mislead us? What reasons did you have to intentionally mislead? Was it intentional? What was the purpose of changing the mechanism? I mean, in retrospect it certainly seems like increasing hologrinding did nothing but delay the number of people who would reach jedi, something this patch culminates with. the economy, perhaps even the entire game suffered from this decisison, and I'm not sure why it was made, why wasn't it left at 5 professions and the strain on the game minimalized? Especially considering limiting the # of Jedi in the game isn't even a concern at this point. Was your intent to artificially interject an element of mystery into a system that had already been discovered?

Please let's keep this thread constructive if you are going to reply. I'm not interested in a deleted bash SOE post so much as interested in understanding the reasoning behind the change, and the reasoning behind lying to the community. I'm sure there was a good reason, I'm just at a loss to come up with what it was. I think understading the rational behind that decision is important for the entire community as well, and important for us to be able to rework/rethink how we interact with the developers on these boards.

well it's possible TH was just trying to add some of the mystery that captivated us all back into the game.

but that doesn't explain the decision for changing the mechanism. considering the current situation we are in with jedi, i can't fathom why it was done, especially considering they should have known immediately that *everyone* would clamor for it.

it's really a two part question...

I too am interested in hearing a dev response to the reasoning behind a change in the system to unlock and the reasoning behind misleading the community (I won't say outright lying, although others will with good reason).

I understand that this issue is somewhat moot with publish 10, but it will create ripples in the community (or tidal waves, depending on whether you were one of the folks who mastered 30 professions and didn't unlock -- and will only get credit for their "hidden" ones) and I believe we deserve a response.

cause if they actually told the profs were raised to 8, they would have gotten a whole bunch of angry custommers saying that "it's unfair, why do I have to do more work than some other dude etc... *whine* *whine*"

that may be true, however, they have angry customers all the time anyway. they had angry customers who were sure the mechanism had changed posting anyway. they also could have remained silent about the entire thing, instead of lying. i don't think damage control was the rationale, but i might be wrong.

Until you can find TH's post, I would say they did not lie.
The dev's have always stated that there was an organic nature to the unlocking of the FS slot. Organic:

(from dictionary.com)Resembling a living organism in organization or development; interconnected: society as an organic whole.

In other words, the system could change based on certain conditions.

As the number of Jedi increased, it became harder to unlock a new FS slot. This was organic in nature. The devs never changed the system, the system was designed from the start to change.

so included in the design of the system was a mechanism that would increase exposure to the hologrind? if that's true, and that's what TH was talking about when he reminded the jedi forum that they were "missing something" it would take care of the lie part, yet still the question remains why?

Well, I just felt I have been robbed. Going to fanfest to learn about all the new and exciting ways of the jedi and the promise to compensate us well for our efforts for the "famed" holo grinding. Spent over 1k to fly out to Cali for what? I didnt go out there to get the slot in the beta test. I went out there to learn on your plans for the different professions and the direction of where this game was leading us. You never said anything about leading us into deception. I dont plan on quitting, but most of my friends are. I dont care about becoming a jedi. But my friends are. I am at a loss of words when they /tell me and sorrowfully ask, "Why havent I got my visit?" "What did i do wrong?".

Then I tell them to just read your post then I pray to god they wont be to upset and quit.

Thank You ThunderHeart. I do understand why you want to limit the amount of jedi's.I really do,But they way you all talked at fanfest made it out like everyone had the chance to become a padawan right away. That there was going to be nothing to stop them from doing so.

Broken Hearts can mend yes...but sometimes the pieces are too far apart to put them back together. Lets see if you can put this heart back together and put a little soul back in as well.

May the force be with you...always.

Because, at the time (design and shortly after the first Jedi), they were probably still hoping to keep Jedi rare. Having the system described above would at least slow down the increase of Jedi.

Now, however, everyone and thier sister is a Jedi ....

He did not lie. They said, it is an organic system to prevent Jedi overrun. The system was built this way from the beginning I think.

He only said, they did not change the SYSTEM, he never said, they did not change the required number of professions...
