The worlds are cut up into pieces (which we cannot see) and each piece is running on its own server. Odd things can happen at boundaries.....

Ah, so the Galaxy is a server cluster type thing and then theres individual computers for different pieces of the world?

I would presume so, although I have no actual knowledge of how SWG works. This is how it worked in Asheron's Call, which also did not have 'zoned' landscapes, ala EQ.
