Thread: Galaxy Locations?
Chilastra
Lowca
Radiant
Shadowfire
Tarquinas
Wanderhome
are ALL East Coast.
When I first created my character, it recommended (and I chose) Scylla. Because The servers didn't have the server location next to it (/nudge devs).
Anyways, my ping is around 170 over there, but I want to start doing some PvP and that is unacceptable, trying to fight someone with a quarter of your ping is just frustrating.
Back to it, I would like to know which of these would be best for someone playing out of TORONTO CANADA.
For instance, if one of these servers is located in say Florida... it wouldn't be much better than one from the West Coast....
Or they could all be located in one spot on the East Coast and then it doesn't really matter which one I choose now does it!
A good trick you can try to find out which server has the best ping for you is to open up the command prompt from the start menu->accessories, then type the following:
ping <servername>.starwarsgalaxies.com
Where servername is of course the name of the server. It will report the ping time afterwards. Just do this for every server until you find one with the best ping
.

all the servers are in the SOE headquarters, in california. except for the european servers obviously.
uhhh.. yeah, you're smart... NOT!
(god i havn't said that in a long time
)
All the servers are NOT located in california. There are some clusters on the west coast (Cali) and some on the east coast (can't remember where).
PS: eclipse's east coast as well.

I guess I dont really understand ping though. I got FPS, but the ping seems irrelevant to me. So what does it mean in game looking at my ping? Is high ping good or low? What is going to affect my ping? If no one feels like teaching Ping 101 it is no biggie, just something I was always curious about.
You want as low a ping as possible. Your internet connection will play the biggest role in how low your ping gets, but the location of the server you are communicating with will also make a difference. Ping is basically the amount of time it takes for a packet (a piece of data that is sent back and forth between computers)to hit a location and return again. It is measured in milliseconds, so if you have a ping of 60 that means it takes 60 milleseconds for a packet to hit the server and come back to you.

East coast gave around 80, which would be around 110 ingame.
Oh well, guess I'm gonna switch to an East server then. Now which one...
Prob Radiant or Lowca since i like their names the best
to be convinced, go and check "noob anthology 2"

more seriously, I think there are alot of servers with good communities out there, but my favorite and main one is eclipse, I'd say bria might be fun too (is it an east coast one ?), eclipse's RP community is good, economy's ok on common things (10k for top notch buffs), all professions are well represented (yes even ranger or SL) and there are a few very good/large rp or PvP guilds.
