How many can you have and still be effective? I am new, right now my char is a Brawler/Marksman/Scout/Medic/Entertainer. Yes probably to much, but I'm new and just trying to have fun.

My setup now is:
Brawler-1h sword only
Marksman-Rifle and Ranged support only
Scout-Exploration and Hunting only
Medic-Chemistry only so far, maybe more I like Medic skills
Entertainer-Dancing and Dance Healing, I might lost this class if I lose any. Its fun enough, I would make a Dancing character elsewhere if I get rid of it.

So what I want to know is it possible to have mostly base classes and be effective at high levels? Can you have mostly base classes and be good in PvP? Any advice or opinions?

Yes you can. The thing is that you can give up these skills later and it doesn't hurt you, you only loose the XP for that skill/class and if you are giving it up who cares ?

You will find that most PvPer's (from what I have seen anyway) will have their combat, as well as at least Novice Medic to be able to use Stim B's etc. otherwise you can't heal effectively.

You are better off going with as many classes as you can IMHO to start with, to REALLY find out what you want, and because you generally don't have the money or whatever to buy everything, Weapons and Armour are expensive enough, if you have to buy everything else (stim packs etc) then you will need much more money. I would suggest getting Novice Artisan as well, that way you can have a look, make an emergency weapon or 2 (no they aren't much good, but they beat the heck out of a Rifle that does 100 - 500 with a 0/1000 quality) because you were so busy shooting things that you forgot to go get yours repaired, it also allows you to make survey devices etc if you want minerals for anything etc.

The only way to really be effective as a newbie character is to have a lot of skills. You won't be really good at anything, but you're capable of a lot. You won't be really good at anything as a newbie anyway, so why not be "not really good" at a lot of things instead?

Once you get more advanced, I would say that you should never have more than 10 or so skill points remaining. Don't unlearn something until you must, and don't not learn something (hehe) just because you'll need the skill points in the future.
