Thread: Star Wars Names: The Name Doctor is IN!
I will give this a try....
Arath'nas------ twilek------- BE/CH (really I focus on BE)
After reading a few hundred of the posts on this thread, I was astonished by theextent of your expertise in linguistics and naming. I can easily say that I am nothing short of fascinated by the amount of time you have put in to make so many posters happy regardless of the utility it may bring to yourself by either practice orsimple enjoyment. Kudos to you for your well priced services. At this point I too would like to take advantage of your ability.
My character's name is Slayn An'diare. Slayn is a Twilek BH.
I am aware that you will probably be upset with the similarities to the English word slain. Nevertheless, it was not my intention to use the name as a threat or even one that would imply danger like that of a rattle upon a snake's tail. I merely enjoyed the sound that it produces. Furthermore, I was not aware of the naming conventions or standards for twileks when I created my character so you are welcome to rail at me for my ignorance if I have strayed far outside the box.
The other name that I used for a character is Rok Tilsnar. Also a twilek character.
The first name is Slovenian while the other was just a random creation of mine. As to these names' places in the SW universe, I am clueless, and therefore, I would like to solicit your pseudo-professional opinion.
Thanks in advance!
On we go with more page 31 names...approximately13 this time.
Agacep Bakoor
Well, I don't see why I wouldn't like this name...it seems to have a good flow, and has a nice variety of sounds. I imagine I will be more enlightened when I run into you and see your profile. For now, I like the name. It's quite memorable. My only suggestion is we make this Twi'lek by putting in the obligatory apostrophe...hmm right here: Bak'oor.
Utenka
A nice Rodian name. "U" names are rare everywhere, and I like how this one fits a Rodian. It sounds almost Algonquin in nature, with the soft then hard forms, but I am fairly positive that is not where you got it from. Good name!
Noel Cye/Gengus Cye/Noah Cye
You picked a couple of interesting names here. I think all of them fit nicely, and follow Riis' law. Noel and Noah Cye will work fine, but Gengus, you realize, is close to Chenghiz/Ghengis, that King of the Mongols who did so much stuff that you learn about as a gamer. You may want to distance yourself yet further from that, as a Jedi with the name Gengus is just asking for trouble.
A suggestion may be Jengus, or Gelgus, as two shifting examples.
Devren Drakewood
A great fantasy hero name, but a little less ideal for a Zabrak. Devrin is a good name, and I like how it fits, but Drakewood is a little too human for a Zabrak. The current fashion here is to muddy the spelling and sounds a bit like this: Devren Drakwod or Devren Drukwod or even Devren Drikwol. There actually is cultural precedent for this on Earth, but I don't think anyone will look at Drikwol long enough to play with it back to Drakewood.
M'eldo Caelgar
Well, it's the way things go in this game that a name can go a little wrong because we are forced to put in apostrophes and dashes. Meldo is a much better name than M'eldo for a human, and nicer to speak out loud. Meldo Caelgar is a good name, it moves through some different sounds yet doesn't linger after that initial "M'" sound. It's a good name.
Sax/Tomaxxir Ryl'Sammin
Your story is a good one to explain the name "Sax," though you would expect to be a musician with that nickname.
The 'real' name, Tomaxxir is a bit leggy and awkward, but definitely alien in nature. I would suggest maybe mixing it up a bit as Tomaxsir. As for Ryl'Sammin, Bothan clan names tend to be quite choppy, often with a 3/3 construction Fey'lya, for instance. I don't see why they COULDN'T be built longer, but I am just sharing what I observe. My standard advice is go 3/3, 3/4. 4/4, or 5/5 at the most. In this case, perhaps Ryl'sam would be good, or Ryl'sami, or even Ryl'samm.
Rheet Unafudah
Interestingly enough, your name is quite phonetic to spell. You have a good example of a name that moves from point to point in it's syllabary. Rheet I have run into as an "Engrish" version of "Leet." I don't think that is where you were going with this, but it's my job to point these things out. Unafudah sounds vaguely familiar, and may be some reference I missed, but I like how it moves along, drawing you into the next syllable. Definitely a unique name!
"Hey Riis, Here's some fodder for your Wookie naming convention. Could the names be a galach approximation of the true name? take for example - N!xau, a San bushman from the Kalahari Desert who starred in "The Gods Must Be Crazy". I believe the N! is a clicking sound that has no representative symbology in english."
Probably. But Chewbacca refers to himself and others using these names while on Kashyyyk. Frankly, the likely story is they(being the army of authors of wildlydifferent skill levels)simply don't have a clue what to do with the Wookiees and their names. For now, I will go with that theory as being a likely, along with the other theories. Hopefully Episode 3 will shed some light.
Makesa Nicewallet
Very fun name for our red name. I imagine Trandoshan skins make great suitcases as well. For Imperials of course. The Rebels are too busy being terrorists to be evil. ![]()
Odei Isnish
Fun name. This is a "say it out loud" name if ever I saw one, so folks, go ahead and do that. I'm sure no one around will mind. I can't say much more about this name. It is euphonious, it moves fast, it has a variety of vowel sounds in it that repeat, it's short. A good name.
Kayden Steelheart
Such a Corellian name, too. I like the name, and hope you can become a pilot with that. This fits in the "Epic Name" category. I notice that the backstory seems a bit...familiar though. ![]()
Well, there they are, I look to move into page 32 tomorrow. Yes, I know this has been slow going for me. I have a lot of irons in the fire, and I don't want to drop the ball anywhere, so until my metaphors and cliches get cleared away in life, we will all have to live with my speed of posting for a few days.
Take care, be safe

I forgot my planet fact for the day:
Naboo is a geologically impossible planet, being a rocky sphere so filled with water that it permeates the core of the planet. A likely explanation is this planet is the blasted remains of another planet, honeycombed with vast caves from the release of magma from within. The water from the surface seeped inside, making me realize that the planet had to have been under miles of water in the first place.
This all being said, Naboo would have a few features that would be of interest:
1) No mountains being built. This means the currently extant mountains are being weathered away, with no new mountains being formed. Soon (geologically speaking), the planet will be flat, and likely under water.
2) No earthquakes or volcanoes. In order for the planet to fill with water, the rock must be "frozen" into place, with no plasticity, and no internal heat to drive any sort of convective movement of materials.
3) The planet must be quite small, but the rock must be of incredibly high density. A planet the size of Earth produces tremendous heat within simply from the pressure of the materials above it. In order for this to be a non-issue on Naboo, the planet must be quite small (helping the "remains of a blasted planet" theory), and have very efficient heat movement within to the outside crust of the planet. The side effect of this would likely be warmer waters within and around the planet than we would expect for a classical planet type. The rock's density comes into play, as some huge amounts of mass must be present to give it an equivalent gravity to much larger worlds.
There you go folks, have a great day!

Allright, here goes.
Thaylo Ptar
Novice Ranger, Creature Handler and Pistoleer.
Born to royalty on Joddan II, Thaylo lived the high life until her late teens, when she tired of the effete snobbery of the upper class.
She yearned for more from life than politics and cocktail parties, so aginst her parents wishes, she left home to find, well...anything.
once a staunch defender of the empire, Thaylo has become a rebel after the destruction of Alderaan, vowing to do what she can to help ensure nothing like that ever happens again.
Recently, Thaylo's sister was murdered in a botch kidnapping scheme, which Thay partly blames herself for, and has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, tho the trail has been cold for months now.
Finally, Thaylo does not believe in the force, nor the jedi. She belives them to be bedtime tales for children, and distractions for the dreamers.

Here's mine:
Nost'afa - Male Zabrak, Master Scout/Novice Ranger.
Now, there is a bit of method to the madness here. First though I need to admit to knowing very little about the Star Wars universe outside of the movies and some of Zahn's books. My logic here may be way off base but it was a fun idea nonetheless.
It is fairly well known that Zabrak are true explorers of the universe, not happy in any one place for a long period of time. My reasoning for this name came from the idea that my character was from a small clan of Zabrak adventurers exploring the universe (the "afa" clan). In this particular clan the clan's name was used in lieu of a last name. My character's father named him Nost (for only reasons he knew),add the mandatory clan last name and you get Nost'afa. Nost of the clan afa.
Make what you will of it.
gender: female
race: Twi'lek
profession: mCh, BE (with a few other fun things; carbine and dancer)
The first name, I came up with a few years ago (I think a bag of Taro chips I was eating helped the name along) and I saved the name for future use. The last name, well I admit it was was SWG name Generator that came up with it and I loved the 2 together. Taru is fairly no-nonsense and I didn't want her to have too girly a last name. I wanted a strong name that was short (max of 8 letters total both names) and somewhat feminine.
Riis,
Thank you kindly for the feedback on my character name ![]()
Just a side note, I was referring to my forums profile rather than my character profile =) I know that if I ever saw you I most likely wouldn't say anything because I know your extremely busy as the mayor of a city and as the master of player created content
Thank you for the apostrophe recommendation. I updated that in my character story/bio's grandfather name. I remember reading something about twi'leks that leave their clan end up with no apostrophe in their last name. Something about before apostrophe is last name, after apostrophe is first few letters of clan name. I think I read it on Stratics, but I can't verify. Is this true?
Ah. I found it.

Excellent resource, however I still don't quite understand the whole "leaving homeplanet get rid of the apostrophe" thing.
