I went to the Deja Falls one and I didnt get a badge. I went right to the highlighted area and I didnt get anything.. Did I do something wrong.

What are the badges for? Is it just something to do.. or does it get you something. I am new to the game and have been reading the posts here to learn more.. Can anyone tell me?
