Got him on my second attempt...
forceshield/forceabsorb on at all times...popped synthsteak nonstop...
Key for me was to forget healing and defensive tactics...and just armorbreak/KD him,then alternate powerattack/headhit for max damage fast...repeat every 30 secs
sat all the way to the back..so i had some time to regen before round 2...then repeat
Guy was dead before he knew what hit him

First time round I sat and meditated while Obi-Wan and Vartonis were chinwagging. Bad idea. As soon as Vartonis went aggro he whacked me for 6800 damage.
An hour later I tried again and it was easy. Sure he hits for thousands of points and has a huge amount of health. So did I. I didn't do anything special to beat him; just used the same old attacks I would against anyone else. I healed a few times but that soon showed itself to be pointless. I had 90k health, he was hitting me for 3k at a time and I can heal for 1.5k. Waste of effort.
I had to use a holo for the round two (Force Armour took one hell of a pounding; probably shouldn't have used it) but I looted that from Xos so it wasn't like I had to run around searching for holos before going in.

However i can confirm that it DOES indeed work! BUT you have to take the second buff BEFORE you kill him the first time.
So enter the room, take the buff while Obi is talking (have it taken before the bad-guy enters the room), take out 95% of the guys health and then use the buff for the second time. Also, if u die before u use the buff you can reenter the cave without having to wait 50min.
I tried using it a 2nd time while fighting Lord V in the first round and it does not work.
You get one use of the crystal for the duration of the instance. No more. Anyone who was able to use it twice obviously got lucky due to a glitch.

After I beat the mortalis goons, I use the crystal when obi-wan says to and then I take all my foods and drinks and turn buffs on.
I tried using crystal twice during the first round and second round. It doesn't work.
I thought this was mentioned earlier.. not sure tho. But in order to use the crystal twice u need to die in there once without using the crystal, thats the way to "save" it for the nexttime u enter. (also the only way to be able to take the first buff BEFORE the Lord enters the room).
SO:
1) Enter the cave, and listen to all the talking
2) kill the mobs that the Lord send in
3) Let the Lord kill u (DONT use the crystal!)
4) Reenter the cave (no lockout this time)
5) take the buff (BEFORE the Lord enters)
6) seconds before u kill the Lord (FIRST time), use the crystal for the second time

Okay, I mus be retarded or there is something seriously wrong when I play.
I was able to glitch the game and use the crystal teice like you said. Vartonis still beat me senselss. In the first round, I got him to half his health and then he just begam to become immune and resisted every single attack i used. I swear I'mnot lying or exaggerating. Every attack. I could not choke,knock down, armor break, or anything. Imissed every attack while he ocntinued to hit me for 6-10k damage. He forced me to use the crystal for the second time early. I finally beat him in the first round, and after having used crystal twice he had me back to 1/3 health. Believe it or not. Two crystal buffs and I was a tthe same point as if I didnt try to use this glitch. Unbelieveable.
I beat his goons again, but when he came back for round two he smoked me hard.

ok i tried to use the glitch again so I could use crystal twice and it didnt work.
I went in, beat the mortalis goons, then I let Vartonis kill me without using the crystal. When I came out it said I had 59 minutes to wait.

MLS/MDef here. My first attempt at killing the DJM was a failure. My 2nd attempt was much eaiser. After the 2nd wave of Guards, I took used no foods but instead the Offensive and Defensive crystals I was awarded in my travels on Mustafar.Force Speed and Aura. Then the Mind and Heath Crystals from the Village quests. Along with +25 BE Clothing for Melee/Ranged Defense.
I used the Alter Crystal as soon as Obi-Wan says so. I beat the DMJ down easily and used about 20% of my health. His 5 gaurds come in to annoy me while he is healing himself. I kill off 4 of them and let on pop be for 50 dmg points each for a min or two getting my health up a bit more. Kill the last Gaurd and the DJM comes out again with 2/3 health. I beat him down again, easily. I never went below 75% health during the whole event. I was NEVER able to use the Alter Crystal a 2nd time (before or after I incapped the DJM the first time). I tried at several different points during the battle. No 2nd buff for me.
Curious though. I am reading in these forumsand I am trying to see if this is true. I have read that Obi-Wan places a 160k buff crystal in your "inventory" for you to use after you incap the DJM the first time. Is this true? I would like to verify this because this would make this quest do-able by more non-jedi.

anyone beat him using ONLY powere/weilder skills?
i'm guessing there's not enough damage potential to beat him even if you can survive to the end of hte cyrstal buff....

finally beat him after like 12-13 trys and do to re-grinding my temp im only 4444 sabers 4444 enhancers and 4xxx healer..with teh food emp poseted on first page i beat him with 50% force left and about 25% health and 1 minute to go on 90k crystal buff. So it is possible just needs to be fine tuned
