Thread: Any tricks to get a framerate boost?

Yeah it seems there are certain situations when, even tho you drop all graphics down to nothing (AA/AF off, shadows off, all sliders to lowest etc) there is still something else influenceing framerates. On the same system you could be getting 1,000fps in Quake3, but SWG just seems to lag a lot more. Don't know why. Must be something in the architecture.

I bought the X800 to get better fps in SWG but doesn't appear to have been a great improvement

Still, I can get >120fps in Half Life 2 (on my 60Hz-fixed TFT monitor..)

Other things to consider though are your basic driver settings. Things like anti-aliasing, pixel shadingand all that stuff. Turn it all off, and work your way up from zero.

You might be right.. I just poked in the knowledge base and... it was so far from my mind I never would've even thought to look for it.

They consider anti-aliasing an advanced feature and it is not natively supported. What?! How is anti-aliasing an advanced feature? I was using anti-aliasing on my Voodoo Monster Fusion (Banshee chipset, remember back when you needed 2 video cards - 1 for apps and 1 for 3d games?) with games more than 5 years old now. I might add that even back then on my 300mhz machine that the games ran at a steady 60fps.*scratches head*

Sorry for the confusion - didn't try it yet. Still at work, I was just doing more poking around.

Start the swg client per normal accept the TOS at the next screen select game options, choose the graphics tab and 2nd from the top should be a drop down menu that says vertex/pixel shader version.Press the drop down arrow and select 1.4 (override) click ok and close the client down and restart the client.See if this helps you any.

I did that as you told, and then also disabled anti-alias. She's running beautiful now! Detailed, crisp, smooth, immersive. Finally!! I'm having to just stop and look at things now that I can display them as they should've been the whole time.

I see the drop-down box, but it is grayed out with "Disabled" inside. I have a fx5200, am I doing something wrong?

Why 1.4 exactly?

I've tried setting the shader to 1.4 with my nVIdia FX5600 (256MB) and I get bounding FPS (20.. then 5.. then 15.. then 7.. then 2.. then 1 for a while.. then 25...).

EDIT: v1.1 does the same thing, only hugs the lower FPS longer.

EDIT2: The launcher says I have version 2.0, so I set mine to 2.0 (Overide) and loaded up. I have never seen the game look this good. JtL comes alive in ways I have never seen. My armor shines! Now, the only problem I have now is the consistant 8 FPS on planets... lol. Ah well.. back to my crappy framerates and crappy image quality until I can upgrade this machine.

There's just something wrong when the game box recommends system spec's so OBVOIUSLY inadequite, when faced with questions about poor performance the DEVs actually instruct you to turn everything off reguardless of how powerful your machine is, and even machines 3x as powerful as their "recommendation" have issues with this stuff. It's been this way sense launch... it's just sad.
