It's just impractical to make them a missile weapon.

but polearms aren't thrown, dude. I wanna chuck this sharp, pointy, poison/disease/explosive-laden spear from out around 50 to 64 meters, not run in and whack with a stick.

They will be pretty slow though...once youve thrown it you'd have to run up and pick it up again before running back and chucking it again. Unless you have it tied to a piece of string.

Spears aren't thrown either, those a javelins. Spears are polearms, javelins are short polearms/ missleweapons.

"Spear" is really a broad category of weapons. A javelin is often described as a lightweight throwing spear. A very long non-throwing spear is often called a 'pike'. If you want to get technical, Websters describes a spear as "a thrusting or throwing weapon with long shaft and sharp head or blade".

A hand-thrown spear was only effective at under 30m or so. This being SWG, I suppose you could add rocket assist and shaped-charged tips or something to increase effective range. The main drawback of throwing spears, and why they were replaced by longbows, is that you can only carry a few, and they're single-use weapons.

You could throw one, but then you'd have to equip the next one, and the next one...all while the guy with the blaster keeps popping away at you.

actually I think the Ewok Crossbow is going to be a new weapon, kinetic damage of course.

But since we're making up different melee professions, then why not a Knife Thrower profession? can throw things like knives, poison darts, axes, spears, etc.

So why not spears? We already have Melee swords, both one-handed and two-handed, and polearms, and then Ranged bowcasters used by Wookiees.
So why not spears? They could have effectiveness like a Carbine, Ideal Range of a max of 50 meters for accuracy, and speed could go down to 1.0, but probably along with suffering some accuracy.
There could be different lengths of spears for different situations, shorter ones for closer range combat, longer ones for hefting out there 50 to 64 meters! Even short, stubby ones for both throwing and stabbing when it gets up close and personal. :->
Ewoks use them already, as did Gungans in Attack of the Clones movie. Some could be equipped with light-weight but heavy damage warheads, tipped with poisons, diseases, acid, even exploding ones with either fragmentation particles or that released burning (a la Napalm).
I'm not any good at expanding to show how it could be made into a whole Elite Profession; maybe someone else out there can give some ideas on that.
But how about talking about it anyway? Your ideas and comments welcome.

They should gimme a BFG-9000 too... lemme see a Jedi saberblock that.

There's just something so Rambo III about that idea. I would prefer to see more energy weapons. i thinkn there was a similar thread on this some time ago, but I thought crew served weapons would be a cool addition.

The weapons could be based on the tripod-mounted weapon the Stormtroopers used on Hoth, or on variations of RL machine guns (M-60, M-2, etc..). They would work similarly to squad gunners.

One person would have the weapon in their inventory. When they equipped it, it would appear in the same way a Scout’s camp would. That player controls the firing and aiming. The second player has ammunition in their inventory. They are responsible for reloading the weapon using a radial menu or other device. The third player is responsible for changing out barrels and monitoring the weapon’s temperature. If it overheats, then the weapon will go offline for a few seconds, much in the same way a ships blasters need to recharge after the gauge hits 0.

The benefit would be that the team can lay down heavy fire like a base turret can. The drawback is that it takes three players to operate the weapon, and due to their lying prone or kneeling, would take a little more damage than if they were standing and running. This would work best if the player with the weapon were a Squad Leader. It might make GCW combat a little more entertaining and add a reason for players to go Squad Leader now that solo-group hunting has been nerfed.

Just as the Knights of olden days had squires to carry their supplies of weapons, we now have droids, up to 5 per person, which can carry up to 10 items each. Plenty of room for additional spears, can have one droid out in battle with you with 10 more spears than you can carry in your inventory (currently up to 60 minus stims, drinks, foods, other weapons and paraphernalia) and 50 items in a backpack.

After the battles are over, the old saying "To the Victor go the spoils" comes into effect: the squires spent the next few hours going around looting bodies and picking up their Master's (and others, I am sure) thrown weapons and other items of interest. At least in SWG we don't have dead (player) bodies lying around to be carted back home or buried.

/sarcasm off

yeah, I compared spear-chucking with medieval times... why not, when our TK's, Fencers, Swordsmen and Pikers (well, maybe not Pikers) rule the battlefield? :->
