It's not as fast as hitting a single key, but you can type: /target name (name being the first name of the player).

Or you could shorten it to /tar for target and the first few letters of the players name...

/tar abe

Some of my pet peeve bugs:
•Armorsmith protection layers were not converted with the CU.
•Ship Details window does not close when you click "Travel" resulting in the message "You have lost the target. Closing interface."

Actually, you've missed the point here. We're looking for a way to /target "nearest player character" or "nearest non-grouped PC"... not someone with a specific name. This is especially great for entertainers that want to group everyone around them before starting a buff, or someone starting a hunting group that wants to invite everyone nearby, rather than /target name; /invite;, or mouse-click-to-select; /invite; for the entire group.

I feel that one reason we're not "granted" this ability (WHICH, BY THE WAY, WE ALREADY HAVE IN THE JTL SPACE-ASPECT OF THE GAME) is that it makes it easier to run an afk "buff-house" or to form an afk "solo-group".

For what it's worth...
