I'm a lot slower at getting exp (MTK, miscellaneous other crap). I think in part it's because I get bored just killing stuff for hours on end. I worked out it'll take me over four years to get to Jedi Initiate. Screw you SOE, and your anti casual gamer policies.

As for the jedi losing xp, tough sh*t. They were supposed to have permadeath, but enough people whined, bi*ched, and threatened to tell their mommies, that SOE gave up on trying to keep the game within the time period.
Me, I'm collecting a few of the trees, namely ranged accuracy and speed, vehicle control, and maybe the luck one.

...but the point is this game would suck with 90% jedis running around with their lighted mansticks everywhere.... Where is the fun in that?

I gotta say, Im just digging the FS boxes Ive unlocked and filled so far. With the exception of persuasion which Im not overly thrilled with as of yet, I love my melee speed. It works so well I had to reset my stats so doing specials wouldnt run my mind out. I've had a great time using my new skills, and will no doubt continue to do so. I've done ten professions without holo grinding, I actually only opened and did one holo. Im just playing what I enjoy doing. If all you want is a glow stick then you have the wrong motivation. Im sure eventually I'll have a jedi, or maybe I won't, but in the meantime, I play this game because its my hobby. Personally Im sure Id enjoy a jedi, but for now Im a Master Doc/Master Swordsman and that seems to be working out just fine for making money and killing just about anything I want. With my new FS skills swordsman is more powerful than it was before. The only thing Im sad about is having to drop scout to make room for the FS boxes meaning I cant gather all my own resources, but hey, life is full of compromise.
