Any new player, which are neutral by default, can be a rebel or imperial pilot. I know that at least one of the rebel squadrons requires you to be a rebel to get into the abandonded rebel base. Do the other squadrons have that same issue at one point or another so you have to eventually join that faction on the ground?
Any neutral player, new or otherwise, who joins a Rebel or Imperial squadron will automatically become a member of that faction's ground force, it is no longer possible to be a ground neutral and a Rebel/Imperial pilot. This situation has already been described in Allia's post and illustrated in Washell's. Thank the GCW revamp for the change.

Well if you dont actually go overt and kill rebel/imp starfighters you should be able to atleast drop out of the faction as a neutral ground faction and join the other starfighter facton...or run a few ground missions to get any lost faction in space back... in theroy i think its still poss though... may take some work but if youre seeking to get all 3 badges well thats alot of work to begin with

Reread the 1st post: Your buddy probably dropped rebel pilot through a faction recruiter which will cause you to leave the alliance. Pilot can also be dropped through the pilot recruiter.
