Thread: Regarding the Lag in SWG...

I think the main reason there is lag here and not there is the level of detail in this game is MUCH higher. If you notice, during character creation in SWG you can customize about5 times the number of details about your character as you can in WoW.

I mean with your face you can customize so many things and make your character look amost any way you want. The game engine has to load that much more data every time a new character is on the screen.

Plus, while the graphics in WoW look neat and have that stylized cartoonish look, I think they are much simpler than SWGs graphics.

(I also have a theory about the dynamic terrain generation that they use in SWG possibly slowing things down quite a bit, but that's another post)

Some of my pet peeve bugs:
•Armorsmith protection layers were not converted with the CU.
•Ship Details window does not close when you click "Travel" resulting in the message "You have lost the target. Closing interface."

I sacrifice graphics for less lag. I got so pissed off one day cause i was freezing for 5 seconds at a time on coro that I turned all of the graphics to 0. Even went into the configuraion utility and checked the low detail models or whatever. I don't get much if any lag anymore although it sucks that the game has to look like Nintendo 64.

I have to agree with RogueFettt. The lag is due to a high detail of graphics. I upgraded to 1 GB RAM and I saw an incredible difference from my 512 MB days and it has improved it alot.

lol no I think graphics has nothing to do with it...I have played MxO (matrixonline) and FFXI, WoW and some other MMORPG's

now sence MxO is not out yet....beta, I will use FFXI as an example

I NEVER got lag on FFXI....when there were like 50 ppl in juno (this HUGE city)...it did not lag....the gfx IMO were some of the best ever. the envierments alone are asome but the char models are good 2 (just not enough customazation)

I dont see why SWG cant just do SOMETHING to reduce lag....I mean in bastine with no ppl it still lags a little w-t-f is up with that?

original poster had questioned about lag in EQ2 vs SWG

I have only 512mb of ram and I experienced VERY little lag in EQ2. Nothing compared to what we have in SWG. Im sure part of this is due to the fact that they have multiple instances of all the zones to keep down the lag. But it works cause that game is very graphically intensive and I got very little lag there. Also, the loading times between zones (and login) were usually a fraction of what I have in SWG, sometimes taking as few as 1-5 seconds. So that game has lag well under control.

No offence to anyone by saying this, but YOU think you suffer from lag? ughhhh try playing on dial-up with low RAM That really sucks, but with the last patch that came out things have became much easier, i never used to be able to shuttle, but now it takes me about 2 minutes to and that pleases me, i dont know what they did, but they have done somthing to cure me of my lag problems...Thank you SWG, oh and on dial-up, anything that involves a group is totally pointless because within 20 sec's of a battle you will have 50-95% packet loss and soon be dead, WOOT

What do you consider a low amount of RAM...cause I'm running on dial up and I never had any packet loss problems, even when I had the graphics cranked up. Maybe its the ISP?

Well, if you want an easy quick fix, just turn down the Global TerrainDetail andTerrainHigh DetailRange under theTerrainOptions in game. That reduces quite a bit of graphical lag compared to having those turned up. I wouldn't bother with the graphics settings in the Launchpad unless you have a slower system or lower end video card. (like a GeForceMX)

Here is a little page I mocked up after SOE posted a graphics settings guide. My extended descriptions are in yellow and the stuff in light blue are the things that will effect your graphical lag or stuttering.
