I know this is a stupid question, but I'm new to the game, and I was wondering how you get those Speeder Bikes that I see everyone riding around on?
Thanks, DJ
Welcome to Star Wars Galaxies.
You have to buy the vehicles from players. Try looking at your map and look under vendors. Try to find a shop that sells vehicles. Or just ask around, there is usually people around selling them.

Also, the one thing that I haven't seen mentioned is what that "annoying green R2 unit" is for. It is there to help new players learn their profession(s).The best piece of advice for new players (and experianced ones starting a new char) is DO THE PROFESSION QUESTS. If you do these you will get a bunck of xp and some free items, the last of which on your 1st Quest is a lease of a speeder bike. After you finish your 1st quest, instead of items you gain about 1500 credits for completing each one. For established characters 1500 credits is petty cash, but to a new char this is almost life saving because this is usually enough for a low end armour jacket or a better weapon.

Good point about the rental speeders.
And now... for the
Jump to Lightspeed Quick Reference Guide* (unoffical)
Ok, you'll start out the game with an email from each of the different Pilot Recruiters. The Imperials, Rebels, and Neutral / Privateer. Itwill give you the waypoint to your Pilot Trainer where you can get your first free starship and your first mission. To save the waypoint from the email, just right click on it and select "Save". Then it willshow up in your datapad and you can activate it and head to the trainer.
Your first ship is a starter ship so that you can start flying right away. It will be pretty slow and weak and it cannot be upgraded with custom parts.
The Pilot Trainer will give you four missions before you will be allowed to train. Even if you earn enough experience for a new Pilot skill, you cannot be trained by him or another player until you finish the first four missions.
The Pilot skill tree requires ZERO skillpoints. Anybody can be a Pilot.
Ships are launched into space from Starports at the new Starship Terminals. You can also manage the parts that are in your ships here and only here.
You can only launch your ship from the Starport that it's parked at.
Ships consist of many different parts. The main part is called the Chassis and it is just the body of the ship. There are also Engines, a Reactor, Weapons, a Weapon Capacitor,Boosters, Missile Launchers, Missiles, Armor, Shields, and a Ship Computer or a Droid.
Your ship will not be able to be launched from a Starship Terminal without at least a reactor and an engine.
There are both Ship Blueprints and Ship Chassis and they are two different things. If you have a Blueprint or if you make one as a ShipWright, you must purchase a Chassis designed from that Blueprint from an NPC (non player character) in a starport. They are usually in the righthand tunnel that leads out to the shuttle. They are a little expensive. You just walk up and talk to him after you have a Blueprint and you'll see what to do.
You can loot starship components from ships you blow up in space. These parts will automatically be placed in your inventory and you can use them in your ship once you get back to the ground. (if you have the proper skill and certification) These parts can be Reverse Engineered by a ShipWright using the right tool to make them a little better than they are when you loot them.
When a Pilot Trainer gives you a "duty" mission, there is no real end of the mission. It is just a mission that will allow you to gain experience (XP) until you have enough to train. I believe they end once you leave the space zone, or you can just choose to cancel them.
Read the book. Read the forums. Take the in flight trainer when you get in space. There are many different ways of targetting ships. Target nearest enemy, target nearest enemy player, target nearest ship of any kind, target next, target previous, target next friendly, target next friendly player, target next enemy, target previous enemy ship, etc. I won't list them all, but obviously you will need to know which buttons do those functions, so look it up and print out a guide.
* This is just a rough guide and is far from complete, but I hope it helps out. Good luck and enjoy your spaceflight.

1) IMO people shouldn't start a piloting profession until they have established some sort of credit base. I say this because ship parts are going to be very expensive, for example the beginner ships that I have used (Skyck and Z-95) cost about 10,000 credit to build the chassis. Repairs, something that has to be done after nearly every mission, cost 1500 creds - 3000 creds on average.
2) Don't just buy weapons based on how much damage they do. I found that I had better luck using a blaster with a fairly low amount of damage, but a very high recharge rate. Same thing with shields, my Z-95 could go through dogfights and never drop below 75% because of the recharge rate.
3) When in dogfights (slang term for arial combat for those that don't know) don't fly at full speed. I recomend running at 50% speed at first. This will make targetting and turning easier and as you gain in skill you can adjust this higher or lower depending on what works for you. Remember, unlike the ground game where your shots are at least in the general area of your enemy, you actually have to have a "target lock" to shoot your enemy.

Tip: configure the keyboard so you can copy/paste!
(Options/Controls/Keymap)
- I have copy as ctrl-shift-C and paste as ctrl-shift-V
Applications:
- See a wp on some webpage or forum? Example: 1234 2345 Cool spawn? Copy the "1234 2345" in your browser, alt-tab to SWG and type /wayp ctrl-shift-C. I used this all the time doing the hero of Tat quest, got a bunch of known spawn points from the guides.
- Splitting resources (for bazaar etc): copy quantity to clipboard (ex. 1000), then doubleclick the resource container, then ctrl-shift-V, then enter. Very fast to split stuff with.

Here's a useful tip for anyone new to the whole MMORPG concept:
It is NOT cool to use cheats or exploits in an online game. Don't do it! It will get you BANNED!
Cheat codes are programmed into othersingle player gamesbecause they have noeffect on anyone but the one person playing, whichisok.
There are no "cheat codes" built intoSWG. This game isn't meant to be cheated on,but bugs existthat allowvarious "cheats" to occur. Exploiting is when someone knowingly uses one of these glitches or bugs to gain an unfair advantage over other players, which is NOT ok.
I didn't know this either until someone explained it to me. This was the firstMMORPG that I ever played. The only other games I played before this were xbox gamesand those games encourage you touse cheats.Anyways, I think its worth explaining to thisa new playerfor the sake of sparing them the embarassment and ridicule of learning it the hard way.
Hope it helps

Hmmm... I should update this soon. I'm just posting this as a little bump after seeing the "Newbie tips from a near newbie" thread. This may just give you a bit more actual useful information than that one.
