Name changing should be a service provided by soe. Even for a fee to prevent if from always being done, like $20 or something. Some people have really good reasons for a name change. What if a jedi knight has been given a bad name (honor and such being what I'm referring to)? Wether he made it for himself or people that just dont like him turned his name into something bad. Same goes for any other player. Someone like that isn't going to delete their character and make a new one but they'd like a fresh start with a new name. I know lots of people that absolutely would never delete their characters but would give anything for a second chance to leave everything behind and become anonymous again. Or what about players who get married? A last name change would make lots of people happy and add to their experience. I dont see why a name change should be a problem and should definetly be implemented. Write if you agree with me.
SOE ignored player petition inititives. Read the forum rules. I like the idea. I wanted a name and it was taken. It would be cool to be able to pay a small fee to be able to switch to that name if it became available. Kind of like how you track domain names.
Multiply those by about 100 or more.
The Database has enough issues as is, any more strain and it'll let the magic smoke out.

Hmm I wonder if someone bought an Ebay jedi and is looking to get a fresh start.
sounds like your drawing at straws here, all the arguments i read were valid reason to want a name changing service.

Try to imagine the enormous amount of changes that had to be made to each account following a name change. Everything associated with that name would have to be changed. Houses, factorys, harvesters, vendors, items (!) and not to mention the email system. A crafter would be extremely hurt, cause he wont have access to all his resources, hoppers and more.
And all of this would have to be changed manually by a CSR.
So I really think that a name change service isnt an option in this game - imho SWG isnt like an ordinary MMORPG, its much bigger and more complex.
But theres nothing wrong with the idea!
Databases uses references in between tables to relate between entries (Relational Database).
If SOE have used the players first name as an Identifier (primary key), then modern databases allow you to change this field aswell.Whenever a CSR changes the Primary Key in the "character" table, then the database would itself update all the related tables (simply replace old primary key with new primary key)
If things like the Friends-list is maintained server-side (not on each users' pc like the macros are) then even that could be updateable.

yea, this would not be easily feasable in this game. Houses, factories, harvesters, vendors etc all have your name on them as the key. You change your name, and the key no longer fits, which then has to have each thing manually adjusted, which I hear is no easy thing that just takes a minute. My friend had his own business, and his name was reported since it was sexually offensive.
Why notmake the person who wants their name changed pull up all their structures and vendors or anything else that might be a problem, maybe clean out their bank. Then they can reset them after the name change. Sure it would be a hassle, but if you wanted your name changed that badly then you would have to live with it. I wouldnt want this forced upon a person the CSRs felt needed a name change, but if you wanted it, were willing to pay for it even, then why not.
