Using Modal Chat in the ground game allows you to use your keyboard the same way as Jump to Lightspeed where you press Enter to chat.

By using modal chat you can use any key on your keyboard to start macros, fire off combat moves, heal yourself and so on and you can customise the keyboard exactly the way you want it.

Also, you dont have to use any of the new icons at all.

This is how you turn it on:

Go into CTRL+O, then Controls and Keymap.

Click on all:

Scroll down till you find Start Chat, click on on it then click rebind. Press Return so that "Enter" appears in the box and click ok.

Click Apply, then click the check box to enable modal chat.

Done! Now when you want to type something you have to press enter first.

Now we can create and bind macros to the keyboard, press CTRL+A to open the Command Browser, click on the Combat tab.

If you hold the mouse over a move in the Command Browser combat tab then you can see what the command for it is, ignore any _1 and _2 though, in this case the correct command would be /firearmStrike. Remember that the commands are case sensitive.

Click on the Macro tab.

You can see here that I have created a few macros already for some of my combat moves.

To create a macro, click on New Macro, give the macro a name, choose an icon and enter the command for the move in the Macro Text window and click ok.

Now go back into go into options (CTRL+O), then Controls and Keymap and click the custom tab:

You can see all your custom macros here, to assign a key to it, highlight it and click on Rebind.

Here I have bound /quickDraw to the number 2 button on my number pad.

Now when you press that button, the move will fire.

You can do this for all your moves and you can find more in the command browser in the "Other" tab.

You can even use stims by dragging them into a toolbar slot and creating a macro similar to:

/ui action toolbarPane05; /ui action toolbarSlot00; /ui action toolbarPane00

This would use a stim in Toolbar 6, slot 1. You can then bind a key to use this stim or enhancer.

If you want, you can download a macros.txt file I manually wrote from here and copy it to your C:\Program Files\StarWarsGalaxies\profiles\[username] folder which has almost every combat move in the game as well as some handy misc macros.

I have started using the Modeless (or is it modless), since recently switching back to SWG from MxO.

It moves your attack hotbar from the Function Keys to the number keys. It is great in combat, but when you forget to hit 'enter' before typing out chat gets frustrating.

It also allows you to strafe, which as a pistoleer is totally necessary.

Dude, that is too much to read and understand at 4am. I seriously doubt that I could count my fingers and get the same number twice at this moment....need more sleep.

Great post, I wish I had the mental dexterity to switch to modeless, but after 20 months of using the classic Galaxies interface, I am very set in my interface. I will try to change to modeless again, using this guide. Thanks.

You don't need to switch to modal chat tobind the 16 buttons on your keypad onto custom macros. So you can have the best of both worlds.

Another thing I did is:

bind TAB key to this macro, to target the nearest visible, attackable target:

/ui action targetSelf

/ui action cycleTargetOutward

and bind Shift TAB to this macro, to cycle through visible targets:

/ui action cycleTargetOutward

I've been using this system for a long time. It's by far the best way to go if you have a lot of specials you like to use. Excellent walkthrough on setting it up!

Do you just need numlock turned off for that to work?

I have num lock always on and have always had macros on the keypad without any issues. Only for a brief time when they were messing with the new modal stuff that I would sometimes get numbers popping up in chat but that seems to have been fixed.

So the short answer is no, can have num lock on or off and using the original SWG controls with no issue. At least that is how it works for me.

I like your way also and messed with that for a bit, it is probably better to do that in the long run especially if you go back and forth from space since it works that way up there. that way you dont forgetand mess up in a space battle and get 5 pop screens before you notice you forgot to type enter first or a / key lol.

I've just manually written a macro.txt file that has pretty much every combat move in the game and a load of misc macros in it.

Here it is.

If you fancy using it, first go into your:

C:\Program Files\StarWarsGalaxies\profiles\[username]

folder and rename your current macros.txt file to oldmacros.txt.

Copy the file in the link to C:\Program Files\StarWarsGalaxies\profiles\[username] and when you log into SWG you will see a load of macros in the command browser under the Macros tab.

You can then bind all these moves to keys by going to Options > Keymap and clikcing on the macros tab.

Oh, I take no responsibilty for any messing up of your game files that you do. Just move the macros.txt file and nothing else!

Nice program, unfortunately none of the Doctor looping macros work. I get a message 'Unable to execute macro: Doctor-AFKwoundheal' after the first wound command is done. It does this for all of the looping macros.
