Thread: Grind/Crystal Hunt

I'm trying to plan the most efficient use of my time for the upcoming FS grind (i unlock my first tree alst night) and was wonder if there is a good place to go get missions to hunt mobs that drop crystals? I've never fought any Tusken, Night Sisters or Krayts or anything big like that, are these types of monsters soloable for a master Commando who is still working on the TKA defense trees? I'd like to start finding some crystals while banking xp and credits, I figure I still have 18 weeks of village quests anyway so I have some time. Any advice would be appreciated.

dont know about for commando, but you can solo NS and most krayts at master of most elite profs i think, all depending on damage types. i am TKM and would easily be able to solo a NS elder, however, i cant even damage them due to them having 100% kinetic resists. krayts can be soloed fairly easily, if you are properly prepared, it just takes a while. i find that the best way to hunt krayts is in a group of 2 or 3 and just take turns to loot, keeping whatever you get for your own use.
however, this will not get you very much xp, you will only get about 5k xp per NS/krayt i think, and for the amunt of time it takes to kill them, it is a very bad way to grind FS xp. best way to get xp i find is to use spin attack in the middle of huurton stalker lairs on dant, but thats for TKM, for you it will be quicker to use grenades cuz you are commando

It's been my experience that the majority of the time, you can hunt for xp, or you can hunt for loot. Never both at the same time -- anywhere that drops decent loot doesn't give good xp, and vice versa.

basically your chances of a low end mob dropping a high quality crystal is low by low end i mean jantas/mokks/ns slaves/tuskens
these mos will give you a good amount of xp though and are known to drop crystals you just wont find the same hq crystals as you would find on ns stalkers and protectors or elders or perls like on krayts but these mobs as said before do not give a fiesable amount of xp to the amount of time needed for them to be taken down

I guess that makes sense, I got my skills to where tehy are douing Quenkers and noticed right away that the xp was great for the difficulty but the payout was crap. I guess I'll just hunt the big meanies in between grind sessions for variety and loot purposes. Thanks for the advice all.

During the early part of my FS grind I was taking a more laid back approach and did Janta/Mokk's. During that time I only got 3 boxes of FS but made around 10 million creds and built up a nice collection of low end crystals. Eventually however I found I just wasn't progressing through my FS skills as fast as I'd like, and switched to more conventional grinding (i.e. nades on nitches). I'd say what's most important is to do what you enjoy. For me I enjoyed the loot/money aspect early on in the grind more, and was more motivated to fill boxes toward the end. Play the game not game the play..

I have taken this philosophy pretty heavily to heart. I get good quality crystals dropped routinely by clearing out the forced labor camp cave POI on Dath. Low-mid level NS galore, a protector and an elder. I usually avoid the elder (although I will solo her if I am looking for a challenge). Killing 50-60 sisters nets almost as good of experience per time as solo group, and you get decent loot as a plus. Protectors drop quality crystals occaisionally, and they aren't too hard to solo if you have decent tactics.
Fort Tusken is good for color crystals, which you will also need. You will get the occaisional fair crystal, but they drop more rarely there in my experience. This kind of grinding is far more fun for me, so it is worth the extra time it takes.
I also take breaks from the grind and go solo krayts (up to giants) for the pearls. Canyons and giants drop premiums, while juviniles drop quality.
At present I have something on the order of 25 good crystals, 5 quality crystals and pearls, and 6 premium pearls. I have a little less than two trees left to fill, so I will continue to keep myself sane by doing that kind of hunting. You probably cut your experience per time by 1/2-1/3 by doing this, but you do get more loot that you can sell, and you get to develop some skills to handle large damaging critters that may be useful when you actually make jedi.

I find more than you're average crystal drop at the canyon corsair POI on southern Lok. I went there to try and find spools of blue wire...but they drop crystals more than anything I've yet fought.

I think the best quality you can expect from the corsairs is a fair, with some poors mixed in. From what I have read they aren't that useful. Just hunt the highest level MOBs you can handle that drop to get useable crystals.
