do i have to? can i wait till i get full buff, a group, and a jedi knight to help. i did it with a group member today . we killed all the sith, got all 4 crystals and killed Mel's bodyguard(starts with a D) but Mel killed us all. I hear a jedi can help, can it be a jedi padawan or does it have to be a knight. and as long as i am grouped with people, will i get credit for the camp if someone else kills MEL. or is it like the phase 4 of village where just have to get at least one hit in for me to get credit?

You can get buffed first, create your group and go kill him..
When I logged in yesterday and travelled between two towns twice, the old bugger jumped at me and gave me the waypoint to mel's camp. At that point, I knew I will get a buff and a team.. before you have the mission it won't make any sense.
So I got buffed by a guild mate and made a 5 person group with 2 jedis in it. The whole procedure with creating tactics took around and hour.
You don't have to kill mel by yourself but you have to damage him. That is very important! and it is a good thing to be grouped with your party! Just hit him once and wait until he is almost dead and than help the others kill him.
cheers

Ps. Don't forget to loot mel. It seems, he started to drop good, very good items (got a sith holocron)

haha,do people not know how to fight any more. Ive done this mission for 3 of my friends already.
First time we had 4 ppl and it was a freaking breeze, no jedi though.
Second time 1 knight came and regulated real fast.
Third time me and a swordsman killed him in around 40 seconds.
I dont get all this talk about forming a group and getting a jedi to help, but w/e floats your boat.
All it takes is a little intimidated and a little burn

Don't get discouraged if you can't find a group, though (however, it would simplify matters). I tried to enlist aid from guildies - but noone was on at the time I wanted to attack Mel, so I went at it alone. 20-30 minutes later, I was starting my Paddy trials. The guides on these forums all basically say the same thing, but the jist of it is this:
1)Kill the green crystals, then the red.
2)Deal with the thugs/pirates that aggro when you attack these crystals. If Mel/Daktar aggro, hop on your speeder and circle the camp until they de-aggro. Those two will often stay where they were the moment they de-aggroed (they don't run back to the camp). This then allows you to take out the remaining henchman.
3)If necessary, take out Daktar. I never needed to, as he was far enough away from Mell, that he never aggroedas I was combatting Mel.
4)I am a Rifleman/TKM, but I basically just kited with Conceal shot on Mel the entire time using powerups on my T21. You can get in about 20 shots before he'll catch a random bleed, or simply decide to charge you. At that point, hop on your bike and circle the camp until he deaggroes. Rinse and repeat. He only ever "touched" me once when I let him get too close and he knocked me off my bike, but a burstrun around the camp saved me. You also will not need armor for Mel, so strip down to your linen.
Honestly,I would have taken help if it was offered, but it is more satisfying to me now that I actually DID solo it. Good luck, either way!

Hey.. why decline the help of a guildy, especially when they are jedi?
And when a lair of Droidekas is right next to mels' camp, than you are even more happy to have jedis with you
cheers
