There are 4 trees (crafting, combat, combat, senses). In each there are 4 branches. Each branch must be unlocked by doing a village quest. The novice box of each tree is earned just with straight FS XP (aka no unlock for the novice boxes) Once you unlock the branch, you can then apply FS XP you have obtained through the trade in and learn those skills.

You need to learn 6 complete branches to qualify for the exit quest . . aka Mel. Once Mel is gone, you are an initiate and given new trials at Force Temples . . . once those are done . .you are a Paddy

You have to complete 6 quests to unlock 6 trees for which you have to get xp and train in 4 boxes per tree you unlock for a total of 24 boxes then comes the old man again. You then are given a waypoint to mellichae whom you must defeat and destroy some power cyrstal things. Then you begin your padawan trials
