Since I seen three different posts on this, this needs a main thread (IMHO)
Iearned 5 unlocks in Pub 10. The way I received those was, prior to Pub 9 I completed 4 holocrons (4 unlocks) and 20+ profession (1 unlocks)...so if you didn't do that....NO unlocks for Pub 10 and beyond (unless you fit the prior criteria).
Now this is how I got my trees, I talked to Paemos and he said I had 5 free unlocks. Now I stopped talking to him and double-clicked him again andselected unlock a tree and I recieved all the FS needed to complete that tree. I then headed over to the trainer unlocked that tree and applied the FS xp to that tree...I did that 5 times. Now I had to grind out that last tree to complete my village quests. You need 6 trees trained to level 4 to procede to the exit quest (Mellichae) anything else you grind out is extra.
Choose your trees wisely becuase once you pick those 6 trees you are bound by them. Now once you're Jedi you are required to have 6 trees(trained to 4) at all times, what is niceyou go back and grind a 7th tree then drop the one you don't want (if that need arrises).
Bottom line: if you didn't do the Holocron work or 20+ profession thing before Pub 9, you ain't getting nothing.
Note:Ifyou opened up a holocron or not....completing one a profession for a holocron (prior to pub 9) counts. On the old system, you did NOT need to open any holocrons to get Jedi....they were there to make it easier, they would tell you 4 of the 5 professions needed to unlock Jedi.

This isnt quite right.
Before the new jedi publish (9 or 10 or whatever it was when the new system came in) the hologrind method was changed to 4 'holocron' professions, and 4 'silent' professions to unlock your FS slot.
You gain a 'free tree unlock' for each of the professions you manage to discover beyond the first two which were informed by the holocons.
I personally did3 holocrons (fourth was silent, meaning id already mastered a holo profession), and 11 additional professions, and only managed to recieve 2 free unlocks.
If you recieved five free unlocks, it was because you did the 4 holo professions (2 free unlocks) and managed to grind your way up 3 of your4 silent professions.
Its possible to recieve 6 free unlocks by doing the 4 holocron professions, and if you had done the 4 silent professions, but managed to master the last one during a stage when the FS unlocking was disabled during the period between publish 8 and 9 (or whatever publish it was that activated the new jedi system)

Then if I got 2 for the 4 Holocrons I completed and got 2 unlocks then master 22 professions for 1 unlock....where did the other2 come from? The reason you didnt get the full 5 was because you didn't do over 20 profession.
The way you get 6 free unlocksis if you unlocked your "silent" holocron profession (inpublish 9 only)and you get a message "you have unlocked your jedi character, the ability to create will exist in publish 10". This is fact, I know someone who worked on their silent and completed thier 33rd profession on the last day of publish 9.

If that is the case then how did I get 3 free unlocks and only grind 2 holocrons with the 3rd being silent? On top of that I only mastered 3 other professions altogether before publish 9? That doesn't make any sense about mastering 4 holocrons and only unlocking 2 trees. Just my 2 cents.

You didnt master 22 professions for 1 unlock... you mastered 22 professions which gave you 3 unlocks as you unlocked your silent ones from the list given to you when it was determined.
As stated, by your method, by me doing 3 holo (and getting the 4th holo silent, therefore 4 holo professions in total, it was just I mastered one before I opened a holo) would mean that I would get 4 unlocks, however I only got 2.
I cant remember exactly where I read the 4+4 rule, but it was in one of the FAQs, presumably highlighted by a Dev since it was detailed by the correspondant.

Its theoretically possible.
2 holocrons with third being silent = 4 holo professions (you mastered 2 before you opened a holocron though) then your third profession you mastered was one of your 'silent 4'
Therefore 2 from holos (having done your 4 holos) plus 1 for one of your silent professions (which just so happened to be the only other profession you mastered) = 3 free unlocks.

So basicly there are all these threads where people are thinking that they are going to get a free unlock some how. If you were from prior publish then you know who you are. So, there doesn't need to be an official how to thread, just a shut up, the answer is no thread.
I forsee a lot of this confusion coming after the combat revamp. Many questions that don't apply. It is a new system people, and it works differently now.

I think the guides nees a revamp. A lot of new FS people are being 'good players' by reading and researching. The guides were written on the advent of pub10 so the craze at the time was the old system -> new system conversion, ie. "Free Unlocks"
Now, months later, I doubt many people from the old system are coming into the new system with 'free unlocks' (although with CU on teh horizon, vets may be returning. . )
Just add a note to the guide and some of the questions about 'Free Unlocks' will be answered b4 the need ot post. . .

It worked like this...
Out of eight professions...
1 profs left - 5 free unlocks
2 profs left = 4 free unlocks
3 profs left = 3 free unlocks
4 profs left = 2 free unlocks
2 profs left = 4 free unlocks
3 profs left = 3 free unlocks
4 profs left = 2 free unlocks
5 profs left = 1 free unlock.
