I have a friend who is a master artisan/master weaponsmith. He would like to keep his skills and not have to pick up much combat abilities. So he is thinking of getting something like 3000 or 4000 commando to use grenades to grind fs XP. Will a non-combat person with just the grenade skills from commando still be able to grind the FS XP ok? Or do you really need some elite combat prof to help with defenses and stuff. He will most likely just equip a launcher pistol so that he is using a weapon that he is certed for in an elite prof (i hear that you need to do that for an XP bonus). He is a human with pretty high mind stats, he has 80% composite. I really appreciate any tips

I just read that you need to have a elite combat prof mastered to get 5k xp per kill with nades. Is this really true?

defensive wise, in this day and age of buffs/armor, as long as he has full buffs (doc and entertainer) and comp armor with atleast 80% blast resists (or resist to whatever nade hell be using) he should be alright. of course he wont be as safe as a combat profession, but safe enough to use the method.
as to whether or not he needs a combat profession to gain full xp, im not sure. i know that you need not have a elite combat weapon equiped (i had a cdef pistol equiped while doing it once and i got full xp, i also have not even novice marksman) as for needing to atleast have it mastered to get it, i dnno. its a possibility, since your xp seems to be scaled slightly depending on your lvl. of course with 4-0-0-0 commando, youll be able to hit the combat xp cap (300k) anyway, so its irrelevant. i dont forsee any problems (correct me if im wrong, but 4-0-0-0 commando uses combat xp to gain, like the finesse tree in swordsman and such)

Ah so maybe it just relies in you having a weapon equipped that you are certed for. I tried using C12 grenades with a DLT20a rifle and scout blaster equipped and only got like 3500 combat xp, where when I had my pike or knuckles equipped, I got near 5000 combat xp per kill.
