I've heard rumors that if you fight anything while you wait for the Old Man, he wont come and you will have to wait longer...Is this true?

LOLOL why do people worry about this SOOOO much. All you have to do is wait. Dont ask about it, dont think about it. Just play. It happens. I was out PvPing overt with 40 people about to take a base and it came as we shutled into a nearby city from where we were gonna bike to.

Its a timer, as long as you are not in a npc city, he will pop - 2-3 days for 1st visit, 24 hours for second. Don't sweat it jsut go about your business, start capping your xp so you can do an initial trade in on when u get to the village for the first time.

A watched pot and all that

True 'nough, the day after I got glowy (last Sunday, actually) I tried to do the 'tricks' to draw the old guy in quicker, shuttling all over a planet, walking all over the place, logging in and out...no dice. The second day, a friend leaves me an email asking for something of mine; I couldn't remember where the heck it was, naturally, in any of my three houses (turns out it was in my safety deposit box, but anyway...). So I go to 'em all, none of them are very close to shuttleports, so a lot of driving...when I see vendors on the arial map along the way, I stop, shop a little, then continue on.

I'm leaving one mall...and here's this guy coming in, saying my name and that he needs to speak to me. Yep, the old dude.

Then the next day, last night really, I start doing the Master Hunter quest, get attacked on Tat by desert nomads, decide 'What the heck, I'll kill 'em,' and realize two of them have 'Sith' whatever hovering over their heads.

Sometimes, you need to trust in the Force My second night on my first Village quest tonight! Whee!

I'm sorry if I am being rude, but these posts are the most annoying posts on these forums. It doesn't help that there are about 3 of these every day. QUIT BEING IMPATIENT!!!!! He will come!!!!!! THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO MAKE THE OLD MAN COME SEE YOU FASTER!!!! If you get antsy at having to wait a few days for the old man to show up, you probably won't do well with the months of grinding that are going to follow.

A watched pot never boils.
