Thread: Combat XP Cap (when does it happen?)

Hey, now before you dust this off as another "What is the cap for combat xp" post, it's not. I know the combat xp cap is 300k, what I really want to know, is when does the combat xp cap hit 300k? The reason I ask, is that to convert my template to better suit some FS Senses grinding, I eventually need to temporarily give up Master Rifleman and drop down to something like rifles4431. What I planned on doing was capping/banking my rifles and combat xp at 900k and 300k respectively before I have to drop master rifles then, when I finish the Senses grind, right away put the banked xp back into riflesxx44 to get my Master Rifleman back (or close to it).

Problem I overlooked though, was that if after I drop master rifles, will my banked combat xp drop to say 200k? or less?If my banked 300k combat xp drops to 200k, I'll have to work harder/longer to get the remaining combat xp back into riflesxxx4 to get my master rifleman title back. I'd just like to be prepared for the shock rather than it surprise me, hehe.

Thanks in advance!

I thought I'd ask this of my fellow riflemen since it doesn't seem to be getting anywhere in the FS forum.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to temporarily give up Master Rifleman to something like rifles4431 in order to facilitate a template change to better handle the FS Senses grind. What I planned to do was bank 900k rifles xp and 300k combat xp to 'save' for later when I can get Master rifleman back. What bothers me though, is that after I drop down to rifleman4431, will I lose some of my banked xp? I've seen this happen with the other profs, ie. i was ranger with like 100k banked scout xp, but when i dropped down to scout 4040, my banked xp was dropped to something like 30k, which really pissed me off...

If it happens, it happens, i'd just like some input from my peers so I can be prepared rather than shocked when it happens. Thanks!

how this works is you can retain 2x the xp of your top most coloum for each experience type.

as you plan on retaining at least 1 row of rifle experience you will retain all 900k when you train back your first rifle box

otoh! (and the reason you should probably drop a rifle xp box instead of the Combat experience line)

you are dropping to level 1 there which means you can train box 2 and then it will dump all xp in excess of 2x the tier 2 box

thus you will be short of reaching tier 4 in 1 go and you will have to grind the last bit of combat experience again to gain your speed back and the master box.

Hmm good question. Hadn't really thought about that since I'm still TKM, but dropped master brawler...I think perhaps you still might need a master in there somewhere....we'll see if someone else knows as I too am curious now eventho I have no plans to change my template.

You wont lose any banked combat xp even if you drop the whole xxx4 tree in rifles. Just as long as you dont convert the xp at the village one day by mistake

Yeah, I know i'd still have to train back a little more combat xp after dumping the 300k back in (if it worked that way) but you're right, if i drop down to level one on the combat xp, my banked level should drop to 2x that level2 box (right?), which means i'll still have to train like hell to get the level3 and 4 combat xp related skills back. Doh.. I suppose as long as i keep a level4 rifle xp branch, my banked rifles xp should stay where it is, which means, i would be better off, tanking two boxes outta the rifles xp branches than dropping my combat xp branch to level1... hmm... i'll have to play with the ol template builder some more...

Thanks for clearing my mind

Actually, if you have 300K combat xp, and you drop skills so that your cap is below 300K, then the very next time you do anything that would grant you combat xp (such as AFKkilling that kreetle that aggro'd while you were looking through your inventory), you will lose any xp that was accumulated over and aboveyour new lowercap. This is what happened to me with scout xp, I had Harvesting IV and capped scouting xp, dropped a couple boxes down to Harvesting II, and the next time I harvested I was informed I lost ### scouting xp, to drop me down to my new cap.

LOL, I remember the same thing happening to me after I dropped Ranger. damn, was that aggrevating!

Anyway, I posted on the Rifleman forums as well to see what kinda info i got from them and came to a couple realisations. Your cap is always dictated by what level in a particular prof branch you are at. So if drop down to 4441, my actual cap will drop to double the level2 box (170k) but still appear as 300k until i execute an action that would give me combat xp (what you said). SO, the best thing for me, I find, is that to ease the burden of replacing the lost xp, i should drop to 4242.

With my banked 900k rifle xp (because i still have two level4 boxes), I can instantly get my x4xx back, then with (provided i don't do anything to get combat xp) the 300k banked combat xp, i can still get backthe xxx4 and my master box. IF i do somethingthat ends upgetting mecombat xp, my banked combat xp will drop to 240k (2x the level3 box) and then i'll have to grind back the remaining 30k to get riflesxxx4 back.

Thanks for the input guys. My mind is cleared.

You lose XP either when you earn the XP and you would exceed your new cap or when you use it (train). I can't remember which. But in either case you are going to lose Combat XP. And a great deal of it.

I'd suggest going something like 4/1/2/4. Especially if you plan on using Rifles for part of the FS grind. You need speed. Also Rifle XP is a bit easier to come by, and if you drop to 4/1/2/4 you will be able to bank 900k Rifle XP if you want to go back to Rifles. You can even drop down to 3/1/2/4 if you need some more SPs for the grind. That will reduce your Rifle XP cap to 700k. But if you used a DXR-6b withhigh accuracy the reduction in Rifle Accuracy will be negligable.
