The following process worked for my group on two back to back runs of the melee accuracy quest. We had failed all previous attmepts. it can be used on the 4 closest bases:
Timer on Commander begins to run at his appearance, not your capture.
Once you talk to commander, and get him out of base use the following to insure that he continues to follow you.
Run ahead 40m. Stop.
When commander reaches 21m use radial menu to tell him to "follow me"
Run ahead 40m Stop
Repeat
By using this method we never had he commander turn around and head back to the base even once. Previously it had happened like every 5 minutes.
Hope this helps.

I will back up this tip. I was part of Pilov's group tonight for two different successfull runs of the quest for our party of 4. This approach worked wonders compared to all our other attempts/failures. It made a huge difference and sped up the over all missioin. Thanks again to Pilov for coming up with approach and using it in our missions.

I tried to keep my commander at a good distance but I must have gotten the running commander or something *lol* I had to recapture when my teammate died and I ran the whole way back to the village, even running the whole way I couldn't keep him at a distance farther than 15m away except when I went down a hill and had to stop when I reached 50 m to let him catch up. Even then the commander hated me and I had to recapture him at least 5 times, once going all the way back to the base. We were doing the closest base on bloodfin, Theta, I thought we wouldn't make it with all the times he tried to escape but we passed through the mists and through the door in the wall and all the while I was chanting 'don't die' andI was so relieved when I got the success message
