If you have accepted the quest but chose to do it alone, can you speak to Capt Sargarillo (sp) and choose to do it with another player to get mind crystal, or are you screwed?

Bad luck I guess... I think you need another player with the opposite mission to complete the quest.

So I could get another player with say, disable shield mission and join him?

you can do it alone ro grouped, it does not matter , the thing is that when its done grouped you need to be grouped with the other person doing the commanders return or the person doing the shield remote.
it does not matter whne or how you do it as long as you do it.

When you take the mission, you're just accepting it, you aren't deciding at that point how you're going to do it. You can do it solo, in a group where you shut down the shields, or in a group where you escort the commander, it doesn't matter.

great, so im not stuck completing it with the one person. I can take another, once they accept the quest and let them get the shield device?
I started last night and my partner got the shield remote, so I assume I got the Commander capture. I can now take say a guildmember to accept quest and he can get shield device.
So im not stuck with the one partner throughout this quest?

Nope, and you're not even locked into escorting the commander. If you get yourself a shield remote, you can take down the shields and let your partner (whoever that may be at the time) escort the commander. Or you can do it all alone (good luck).
I did this yesterday with 4 friends, I grouped with my partner who took down the shields and the rest were ungrouped. It seems to make the mission a bit easier, in less sith spawn, if the actual group is small. We succeeded on our first try.
Escorting the commander is wild. My heart was pounding the whole time. Thankfully, my group was able to clear my path very successfully so I could concentrate 100% on the commander. Keep him close, and if he stops for any reason, get that radial menu up and select "Follow me", he may be trying to escape. He tried twice last night, but since I was able to watch him so closely, I was able to keep him following.
