Thread: Confusion and questions about my free unlocks

The Sith visited me Saturday afternoon and I found my way to the village, and after starting Phase 4's melee defense quest, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I have *4* free unlocks waiting for me. I didn't exactly hologrind with the old system, but I did pay my dues!

I have a few question about my free unlocks, though. Do the free unlocks count just to unlock the branch, and then I still have to earn the XP? Or do I get an unlock and all the FS XP I need to train the entire branch? Do I get the quest reward if I use a free unlock? I realize that you can only unlock one branch per phase with a quest, but do the free unlocks work the same way? Do I have to unlock only one branch per phase, or can I use all four in succession to unlock (and hopefully) complete four branches from three different phases, if I so desired? Lastly, can I use my free unlocks while still completing the quest for phase 4?

Any help would be appreciated!

You get the xp too, to fill up the branch completely. Supposedly there is no xp cap on the xp you get, but to be safe I'd just unlock and train up one branch at a time. Better safe than sorry - no need to grind crazy amounts of FS xp when you don't have to.

Or do I get an unlock and all the FS XP I need to train the entire branch?

Yep, what I just said above

Do I get the quest reward if I use a free unlock?

Nope. Only if you actually complete the quest. At least, that's my understanding of it.

You can do them all at once, no waiting. That's the reward for doing the ol' hologrind system.

Lastly, can I use my free unlocks while still completing the quest for phase 4?

Yes. Just don't use a free unlock for Melee Defense, as you're completing that quest to get the unlock

Any help would be appreciated!

And another question....from the way I understand it now, you use a free unlock to unlock a branch, and you're given the total amount of XP you need to train all the boxes of that branch.

Hypothtically then, would it be possible to have a branch unlocked, say from a quest, then unlock a branch with a free unlock, then use the 1,275,000 FS XP you get to train the quest-unlocked branch? Then you would have to train FS for your free unlock as if you'd quest unlocked it. That's assuming, of course, that you get a free unlock as well as all the necessary XP to train all four boxes of the branch.

Here's a more concrete example from "real life." I'm doing a quest unlock of phase 4's melee defense right now, so I'll need 1,275,000 FS XP in order to train all four boxes in addition to finishing the quest. I have 450,000 pistols XP and 200,000 rifles XP to apply towards Combat Prowess and Enhanced Reflexes, so I'm in good shape already. The other skills I was thinking of unlocking either via quest or my four free ones are:

Phase 1: Persuasion
Phase 2: Melee Speed
Phase 3: Melee Accuracy, Ranged Defense, Luck

However, I was thinking of unlocking either Phase 1's Persuasion or Phase 3's Luck via quest, since I have a lot of CH, Dancing (900,000!), and Scouting XP I can use to move through the line, and I'm going to remaster Musician to supplement. However, I don't want to do the Persuasion quest since I don't have Master Medic, and I don't want to wait around until Phase 3 to unlock Luck. If I then unlock Persuasion via a free unlock, can I take the 1,275,000 FS XP I get and apply it towards Melee Defense that I am in the process of unlocking with a quest? Then I would have a phase 1 branch ready to be trained as I get FS XP, but I would still be in phase 4. Then I would only have to wait until phase 2 to do my next quest unlock, plenty of time to train through Persuasion.

Convoluted? Yes somewhat, but I'm trying to play to my strengths as well as save a bit of time.

One more thing. Melee Accuracy seems to be THE hardest quest. I would use an unlock on that first.

If you are planing to be a Jedi then the consensus seems to be that there are four very useful skills fotr a Jedi:

Melee speed, Melee Accuracy, Melee Defense, Range Defense.

There are a few that are nice to have:

Vehicle control (Faster getaways), Survival (some terrain negotiation), Persuasion (better chance against scans), and Luck (more credits dropped, although Jedi arn't going to kill NPCs because of visibility)

The rest are of questionable value for a Jedi.

Yes, I was thinking of going back to the Village this afternoon (and it will be going back since I died, didn't clone, and then quit. ) and at least taking Melee Accuracy and Melee Speed until I can sort out my second question above and finish unlocking Melee Defense. I'm a 3-1-4-3 TKA, so the extra melee help will definitely see use long before I become a Jedi, if I ever take that path. Even just having the FS skills will be nice.

Under the old Jedi system (pre-revamp) when you got a new character, becoming a Jedi took 250 skill points and you could not take on any other skills. Is that still the case? Will I have to drop TKA and all my other skills in order to become a Jedi?

You won't have to drop TK right away, however as you are learningJedi skills, I believe you have to use at least 230 skill points toward Jedi skills to obtain Knight, after the Knight trials. So, as you gain Jedi xp and learn new skills, you will most likely have to drop some TK if you want to learn more Jedi skills, however I think keeping the meditating branch helps for as long as you can keep it.

Melee Speed helps with grinding, at least it does for me. Haven't learned Accuracy yet since I'm out of skill points.

Ah, missed something...

The 6 branches (24 boxes) that require 24 skill points count toward your 230 skill points you have to use to get from Padawan to Knight. So really after Padawan, you'll need to use up 206 skill points if you wish to get to Knight.
