I don't think you'll need it. I believe all it does is function as an 'easy' way to open your quest journal. They added this before they made it so you could bind keys through the controls for the quest journal. When the radial on the crystal was broken, a lot of us just made a macro for /ui action questJournal. I believe you can also get a new one from the Village Elder.

You can drop it. I have 8 of them sitting in my house. Once you drop it in your house, go to the village elder and ask for another one.
