Thermals are definitely the way to go. If you are patient and aggro all the giant baz nitchs(what I like to kill), then you will get with about 10-15 thermals, 80-87k xp. Yes you got that right PER LAIR. To do this of course you have to be in a huge solo group.

ive finally given up from unarmed xp and c12s....im gona go all the way and use protons now

it will be a bummer once i have 5 branches (master enhanced reflexes and melee speed combatprowess)

and i have to drop commando to go doc or maybe squad leader for heightened sences persuation :S

As a former master commando and user of thermals...I have no idea how you're doing a lair with 3 stacks or less. I always used at least 5 stacks per lair...

But the combat xp is nice!
