I experimented with the C12 -> Lair method and was able to rack up XP pretty rapidly. It does work; however, if you have the time and resources to train upcommando, everything I read here indicates that it's worth it.
One hint: if you do go the C12 route, I suggest you invest in some grenadepowerups they do make a difference.

c-12 works, with powerups your looking at 1200 damage light armor piercing..
thermal grenades with powerup=2300+ with medium armor piercing Imps have higher damage but the damage tends to even out when the piercing is taken into account.
I would say looking at the damage numbers alone that thermals or even imps are twice as fast as c-12
commando takes a hella lot of SP so if youhave a good template stick with it and buy c-12 and powerups, maybee take up smuggler slicing tree to get an extra 30% or so out of em. Any increase in damage will save you $$$ in grenades down the road.

If you're going jedi, then a template change shouldn't really scare you. I just picked up commando 3000 in about 1.5 buff sets, so getting commando shouldn't be too hard. The main cost is the grenades themselves, which could set you back anywhere between 1-4 mil depending on your server and how many trees you've already filled. I'm yet to try out the grenades, but going by my friends it is ALOT faster. I think i can get a tree in 2 buff sets if I try...
Once you've banked all the xp you can also go back to your original template, so if you're a powergamer you can get all the xp you need in 2 weeks then go back to your original template as if nothing happened

I've been doing the C12 thing myself. It's ok, certainly a whole lot better then straight up combat. It would be worth going commando, but I only had 3 branches to unlock, and I've already earned about 800,000 FS in just a few buff sets. It's not going uber fast, but it's cheaper.
If you have the money, go commando.
Also, I haven't really noticed much difference with grenade power ups. Certainly not enough to offset the cost. If you can get a crate of powerups for 2500, that's still 250 per grenade, that adds up if you're not really doing well with money.

It's a bit faster with C12 than with TK, but it's expensive and annoying... I tried but let it down... I'll still have the xp before the next phase 3, so... choice is yours

well i use c12's to supplement my normal xp. so instead of just 900k unarmend and about 90 to 100k combat i endump at about 250k combat which works well for me, i use accuracy food too to ensure that the nitches dont doge the nades. How the hell does a nitch `dodge` a grenade tho.? =)

If you read the guide and use the grenades properly you will not "miss" anything. Throw grenades at lairs and let the radius of damage effect the mobs. You never miss lairs and they do not dodge. Just be sure you are standing within the blast radius and have whacked the lair enuf times to get it to spawn max mobs.
As for the use of powerups, I guess that is server dependant, if nades are cheap on your server say like less than750c a stack then it would be break-even(2500/10=250each 33% extra damage means 3 equal and extra stack theoreticaly). PuPs add 33% damage so it increases the effictiveness 33% (on the average). On most severs the paltry 500c/nade for powerups is well worth the 33% in increased damage as it will stretch your nade supply 33%.
