Thread: Pirate/Outlaw quest what were you thinking?

I can only assume that whoever designed this quest never plays the game, because it nurtures and caters to all the worst traits of the game's worst players.

1- The content isn't instanced or per-group/player getting the quest.

2- Quest NPCs spawn at a single locationand are available to all comers.

3- Everyone congregates at the known NPC spawns.

4- 80+ players try to engage mobs spawning in pairs.

5- Being unable to get their kills in one round, people who weren't macroing the first time set their chars to macro and go afk, hoping when they return the next spawn will have happened and they'll be done with this stupidest ever of swg quests.

The result is:

a/ A large camp by a number of players the game clearly isn't designed to cope with.

b/ A mass kill-steal.

c/ An impossible framerate - with all the commando and effect weapons, most of us were experiencing fractional frame rates. On my 3ghz system with a 5900 Ultra I turned everything down and still frequently saw around 2-3 seconds per frame.

d/ Unusable command lag - the server just couldn't handle it - so I missed out on lots of kills purely because the NPC was dead before the server responded to my request.

e/ Numerous mysterious deaths - players simply dying between frames.

The only positive thing about this quest is that it reasserts that SOE/SWG is all about macroing and grinding. This is the quest that tells you "If you don't plan to macro/grind, you aren't cut out to be a jedi".

Thank heavens EQ2 and WoW are here the next week or two. I can just quietly put SWG to one side and wait until Lucas Arts do the job properly.

I actually like this quest, the Combat people fight, and the Medics are required to heal the Combat people. The whole quest has a good multiplayer aspect.

Actually I dissagree this is among the best of the quests.

1. You get credit for being in the attack. So you don't have to be the person that gets the kill

2. The spawn points are obvous and easy to find.

3. It actually fits in with what the village will end up looking like next phase.

4. There is enough of a break between spawns to do other things. (like writting this)

And if anyone is really doing your point 5. I would hate to see how often the thugs kill them.

The only thing this quest need is more pirates and less thugs

I had no problem completing the quest. Saturday afternoon on naritus. Took 2 anda half spawns since I got to the village in the middle/end of a spawn. Igot in a group of 20 people. Went to the spawn area south of the village. Used spin attack with my scythe. I needed the last spawn to kill 8 pirates and I was done. Then I left. It was fun. There was a doc in the group that healed/rezzed some people. And notone person complained about kill stealing. I wasn't even concerned with looting, I just wanted to get the quest done. It's done! Bring on phase 1!

I am going to have to kind of agree with Kalvin, I can only hear so much bitching and whining before it brings me over the edge. I beat this quest with Master TKA in a few hours. Past quests took me a few days. Think of it this way, if there was no grinding at all, and any idiot could be a Jedi, what would the point be of playing?

I don't disagree that the -idea- of a defense of the village is a good idea, but the implementation is worthy of Interplay. It is a totally un-starwarsy experience - 94 people vs 2 - it is a technically difficult execution - 48 commands firing flamethrowers, grenades and scattershots along with 44 other people trying to engage in ranged ormele combat, which both the client and server are unable to cope with. And the reason I ask "what were you thinking" is that anyone who has played the game should have been able to predict this was how the players would take this delivery of mission.

It's why so many other games are using instancing. It's why there is a group size limit of 20 players. These are all simple, basic game concepts that whomever designed this mission was either ignorant of or simply never bothered to think through.

As for soiling myself, absolutely not. I've been looking for an online starwars game for 15+ years, and since beta it was pretty clear that the team believed they knew what they were doing because of their own hype "we are the people who brought you eq". They weren't. Same company, totally different team. You only have to compare how slick and well honed EQ2 is to see that they are a universe apart.

I closed my account about 2 months after release. I came back purely because I'd heard there had been a lot of staff changes and they had adverted the disasterous mistake of making JTL with the same engine they use for the ground - and they'd removed hologrinding.

all u need to do is hit the dude 1nce for u to get credit i finished this quest in 15mins it was fun and big groups of people and it made sense because the next phase starts again from when the village is in ruin..and when u do finish it doesnt say the village is safe forever or something along that line it says get some R&R and we may need u in the future so it sets the base for the next phase which is the renew of the cycle...this phase is good to set up and continue the cycle

I completed this pahse tonight after only talking to the Captain this morning. I and my guild thought it was great! We went out with an organized group and knew what to do. Everyone on Tempest at the Village today was shouting out when a pirate popped up (since that was what we were all waiting on). Heck, I had people help me with thugs when they did not need to. No problems with lag either (1GB of RAM ran me at 30fps the whole time).

So, overall, I would say you are whining about nothing.

I dont understand why people are bitching about this quest......there is no kill stealing involved here......if you get 1 hit in on a outlaw or prirate you get credit for the kill.....just stand in the middle and use an area attack and you will be done with the quest in no time at all....very easy quest to finish.

Worked very well for me...imo not as much player...maybe 30 or 40(on each entrance to the village)but for sure more than 2 npcs....i saw 8 to 10 thugs spawning as well as plenty of outlaws and pirates in each wave....most people got there kills within 2 or 3 waves....the ranged people didnt use "specials" and the melee got there counts with lunge-attack...all i had to do was circle around...ok from time to time some thugs had to be killed...but that was fun...3 or 4 player chasing one thug down and a healing medic in the back...i enjoyed those maybe 90mins a lot...

We had no trouble completing this quest with 80+ people yesterday. Everyone made sure not to use their specials so everyone could get a turn. Players who were waiting on Pirates to spawn took on the thugs so the others could go after the Outlaws. It took two waves of Sith, but we all had a lot of fun. There wasn't any cry babies like you whining. Doctors were giving out buffs, Dancer, and Muscians were setting up camps during the wait to buff up and heal players. I think this has been one of the best quests they have done.
