I have this guy who is telling me I cant train in my previous unlocked skills after the phase is passed. What is the truth, anyone ever trained in a FS tree out of phase?

Good, he said he would bet me his jedi. I think he will reconsider after reading this post. Anymore post about having done it themselves would be appreciated.

you can only unlock that particular phases branch during that phase. You can train i.e. 1-4 at anytime after the box has been unlocked. If I was going for melee speed I would only need to unlock or finish that quest during that phase then I can fill the boxes anytime after that. Hope this helps

However, you can gain all the xp you want into the bank and after you unlock, you can then train the tree. I have pretty much a few million xp in both the er and cp skills. I only trained them, at the cost of some of the skills I use, right before the cu as a precaution. So although you need to unlock a particular skill in a particular phase, you can get xp for it anytime before or after you do the actual quest.
