I am alreadywaiting for that old man for 21 hours now. I read that if I leave my character AFK he will walk away. How long does he stick around? Does he say anything when he comes that appears in the spatial window?
Can Iattack him after we have our talk?

At least does he make any noise so I can hear him if I raise the volume?

He makes no noise that any other NPC or mob wouldn't make. If you miss him, give it a few minutes and he will come back. Stay out of static cities like Coronet. Player cities are OK (my Old Man came to me while I was waiting to board a shuttle in a player city on Dantooine), so you don't necessarily have to go hang out in the wilderness. Check the stickies and look for a good forum post on going from Glowy to Padawan. It lists various strategies for "attracting" the Old Man (such as shuttling around, logging, etc.) though I do not think any particular strategy has been overwhelmingly proven to work. These are probably just coincidental observances of what the player happened to do leading up to the time the Old Man visited them.

Best advice just play the game, he will come visit when you are not expecting it. It is kind of like waiting for water to boil. Takes forever until you get involved in something else, then it starts boiling as soon as you forget about it.

In my opinion the wait is a silly touch. It's just as the grind was. Evil...
What's the point to it? To let those with a dial up connection and little free time to stand there like fools?
I wish I could fire the entire dev team!

A friend of mine got his 72nd hour Old Man while we were running quests on Tatooine. He just popped out of nowhere and began talking to him. . . WHILE he was fighting Tusken Raiders. I found that to be a bit rude, really. Though what really cracks me up is that he has a really, really awful load time. And he was jumped by the Sith as he was loading in the wilderness. He is a TKM, though, so by the time he logged in, the Sith were already dead. He logged in to find a group of corpses, owned by his auto-attack.
