Well as I close in on he end of my grind (only 400k FS XP to go) I have begun to think about the future. My current template will being to unravel as I add jedi skills. There are many questions I have but they are too noobish for the jedi forums so I thought this would be a good place to ask as I am sure that many of you have had them answered recently. . .

In order to use non-lightsaber relatedforce powers, must a LS or robes be equiped? For example, can I use lightning without havign a robe on? Can I heal myself without the robe? etc...etc...

I have always been a ranged player and would like to remain a ranged player and keep most of my current template (master pistoleer/bh0040) but all the jedi I know say "you have ot get master LS". I guess I just dont beleive it...just like the people who always say "you cant compete in PvP as a pistoleer"

Unless I get some insight here, I guess I will do as I always have and make my own way and develop my own template. . its more fun anyway, right?

I will preface with the fact I am not a jedi, but I have read through all the faqs and alot of forum talk to know that the primary reason for MLS is the amazing specials and the increase in accuracy, which i think is more important. Everyone is right, you can make it happen w/o MLS I guess, but if there is anytihng in jedi template really "necessary", without any experience of course, i would have to say MLS would be it.

As a new Paddie I can tell you I have only wore my robes once while grinding. I prefer BE clothing for the melee defense since I still am a master rifle. You can heal and use the other powers without the robes and ls equipped but most of your Jedi defenses are tied to the sabre. I have only novice boxes and am half way to my first LS box (yeah) what a slow grind it has been. You cant kill crap. Get as much melee defense as possible you will need it when doing the novice LS box. Oh and for those who are done grinding and waiting on phases changesHUNT CRYSTALS. You can never have enough. Most tune like crap.

you only get jedi xp from a lightsaber. force lightning is too slow to be used as an effective means of xp gain (and I don't even think it gives xp for using it).

You don't have to go MLS though, the problem is that MLS is so good that there's no reason to pass it up. But there are plenty of good jedi that took something like 4004 lightsaber and then mastered powers and defender and have great templates. I actually did this a while back on TC and liked it, only downside was that I had no means to heal myself, but it took a lot to take me down.

But basically you are required to learn LS and being a ranged jedi isn't much of an option, all your ranged attacks will cap at 32m. You will need force speed2 to use any non saber skill quickly (which is fine since you might want force run if you don't have MLS).

In order to level jedi in any efficient manner, you will want a level 4 box in LS, I suggest, as many, you grab 0040 lightsaber (you can grab novice saber, then saber 0010 and then the other novice boxes so that your force pool gets bigger, but if you get a nice -7 to-10 force cost crystal you won't go through that much force).

After you get that 4'th saber box you'll notice that you're doing very well. 0040 sabers is like having master pikeman, so that at this point you're going to be getting xp pretty quick (i get about 300k a buff session, some players might get more, i don't grind that fast). I suggest you go for saber tech after, but i drifted away myself and grabbed some healing and enhancer. But have gotten back and am at 0042 now, saber throw is very nice for those creatures that run with 5 health left.

I think what you need to do is read the jedi FAQ and look at the different templates that are listed. There are double master and single master hybrids that are worth reading. The important thing to know is how you like to play. If all you like is ranged combat, it might be hard to convert your playstyle to jedi. I'm not trying to talk you out of jedi, just want to be up front and honest. Playing jedi is like playing any melee profession and not like playing any ranged profession. I've mastered all the combat classes, several times in some cases. The closest LS comes to, in my opinion, is 2 handed sword.

It's also important to read the posts from players that discuss the powers tree. Force choke is very cool and there's so many good things in the powers tree that its tempting to take them all, I plan to take just the force lightning tree myself as I've heard a lot of negative things about the rest of them and my experience with force KD was that it wasn't needed since the LS KD's players. Animal attack was cool, but rarely needed and force intimidate didn't work as well as brawler intimidate...

great info...thanks man. .. I know that I will need to do LS...I was just hoping or grasping at the possibility that I could be somewhat useful without it. . .

another extremely important reason to take lightsaber is the fact that it provides the only defense outside of the defender tree. At light saber tech 4 you have 30 LS toughness and at master lightsaber you have 45 LS toughness. This is even more important, in my honest opinion, than the fact that you get the quick attacking high damage multiplier attacks.

plus LS block for ranged attacks which is why at MLS ranged Bh's can barely hit...
