So i get my nice little radiation sensor . .and off i go! upon using it though . .i go from the science outpost to village a few times and always have a weak signal? is theres something im doing wrong?

Your target will be around the village, not further than 2k I would say... When you see the number go up, you're getting closer. But they won't be around the FO, and not necessarely in a straight line between the village and the SO
