When i first started playing this game, jedi was rare. It was marginally more difficult and time consuming to obtain. And it definately was a grind that would earn u some respect.
Now lets pretend for a second that not everyone wants to be a jedi. Lets pretend that jedi is still a profession that is rare and to be respected for obtaining. Lets pretend that we would like to keep this game somewhat true to the SW timeline and that u should never see groups of PVPer's running around where the most abundant profession is jedi.
I believe the most practical way of doing this would be to not change the way jedi is grinded but to enhance it. Imagine if hologrinding was still effective. But instead of unlocking jedi after completing your 8 holos, u only unlocked force sensitive and gained entry to the village. At this point u would still have to fulfill your 6 phases of the village and once completed u could carry on to the padawan trials.
Just wondering how the rest of the community would feel if something like this was implemented. I will posting this in the jedi forums as well to see the difference in response by both fs and jedi players.

the problem is that it doesnt matter how hard to make it as a jedi eventually there will be lots of them, even if the holo grind (which was before my time) was still in play there will come a time when they start popping up all over the place. It's like when a new MMORPG comes along, after say 3 months the first level 50s will appear, then as time goes by more and more come along until you see them everywhere.
I would like Jedi to appear more rare but since I started the game with Jedi in it and haven't had any PvP experiene I don't care when I see them, and I still think they are pretty cool
And of course the whole jedi/FS path should be revamped because so many people hate it and it has so much possiblity, but there should also be an alternative to it then there would be less jedi since many people just go that way because becoming a knight is like the "end game" type thing. The real way to lower their number would have say 5 profs, which are as long as the jedi grind but gives things which are as cool as being a jedi (like becoming a Mandolorian) which would mean there are alternitives which people could choose.
Anyway thats just my thoughts on the matter, sorry for going a little of topic lol.

Yeah, you can make Jedi as hard as you want to attain but people will do "the grind" because as far as combat goes Jedi rule pvp and can do most high end content with little trouble.
There is only one way to make Jedi rare. Everyone knows what it is. While jedi remains the most elite combat prof everyone will want it. Make other combat profs more effective than jedi and you'll see the population go down. Other than that there is no solution.

i want them to scrap the game and make a SWG2 in the either the New Republic or the Old Republic, in both jedi are more prevelant than this chosen time period and atleast that way they could have almost free reign over what they wanted to do content wise.

Or, there could be an added badge, "The Galaxy Badge"
you could get this after playing for 6 months straight, this could be a requirement to becoming FS, But, you can only start your first quest during Phase 1
6 months of play, random time waiting for phase 1 to come around, 6 phases of FS quests, that would put a huge delay on future jedi.
But, IMO, the above idea from me, Sux LOL

The best way to keep Jedi rare is to make Jedi play difficult.
The Jedi system has been the most significant SOE failure, a fact shown by the constant need to revise the whole enterprise, and the ultimate failure of their "solutions".
The problem with the earlyhologrind was that it rewarded the worst segment of players. The 1337 exploiters were, by and large, the head of the jedi race. But, eventually, there were enough holos and enough people mastering everything so that persistant players were thrown into the mix. Sure, people who play all the time deserve a reward, and it's better than limiting jedi to 1337s, but mastering every profession or finding enough holos were still lousy solutions.
So instead, SOE got away from mindless grinding and gave us a quest system based on - wait for it - mindless grinding. Well, even if this wasn't a big surprise, at least people now knew what to work towards. Finally, even casual players could play the Jedi game, though it might take a year or more to rack up the XP just to start Jedi initiate.
The end result is that SOE keeps looking for an *entry* system to keep Jedi rare, but that just isn't going to (and hasn't) worked. The vast majority of players have at least *some* interest in playing a Jedi, and many have put in the extraordinary effort to become one. This indicates what we all already knew, that Jedi are very popular and a major drawing point to the Star Wars ethos. It also fully indicates that any system designed to "filter out" people from becoming Jedi won't work without hard caps, and hard caps are hardly fair. So a different mode is needed.
That system should be based around the difficulty of staying alive. Let everyone make a Jedi. But then, show them why so few exist in thistime period.
Playing a Jedi should be difficult, not because they require X many more times XP, but because the universe is hostile. The empire should be actively hunting ALL force sensative users. Even the dark siders. Bounty Hunters (NPC) should track players who spend time on Central Planets and attack based on a kind of visibility system, to encourage all force users to stay on the outer worlds like Talus or Tatooine. Numerous other environmental pressures could be added to make the game hostile to Jedi.
This system has the advantage of giving everyone a chance, but rewarding those who stick with it. Furthermore, it serves to limit the visibility of Jedi, a constant complaint, reducesmindless grinding somewhat, and makesplaying a Jedi a better achievment than grinding or"Fight Clubbing".

I think one thing that many people forget about, is that unlike games like EQ, this is not a quest based game. Your role and status in the community is based on the template u have grinded. If jedi is going to be the most uber combat prof in a grind based game, then it should require the most intense grind. But as for the part i highlighted in green...this is a great idea!!!...after u have completed the grind though

too many people love this game and love the idea of jedi to not spend countless hours trying to obtain the jedi profession. I really do wish Jedi were as rare as they used to be but there is no stopping people from grinding out several months or even years to become Jedi, people just love it that much. I really wish something could be done though

From a recently-unlocked Jedi Initiate, I will tell you that in the early years, Jedi is no walk in the park. In fact it is by far the hardest profession I have ever been through (and I've been through most of them). You are slow as a sleepy hutt, have absolutely no accuracy, and should you die for any reason (God forbid) at initiate alone you lose about an hour worth of grinding XP. Now some of the Jedi have been consoling me that it gets better, but I am actually rather worried.
I hate to bring the CURB into this, but I have a feeling that it's going to take some of the shine off Jedi, especially those of us who get caught grinding out our templates right as it hits. Lightsabers no longer do special lightsaber damage, so that bonus we got going through all creatures and most player armour is gone. Instead, whenever we're up against an opponent they can pull out light armour (I think that's the stuff with energy resists) and we're screwed! If the bounty hunter correspondent is to be believed, Bounty Hunters are getting buffed again (to their credit, I've been a BH and it's a crappy prof. It definatelyneeded some improvement). The game difficulty is being bumped to blast away this notion of being able to solo everything in the game, but the problem with that is Jedi are supposed to grind solo! When even our own faction-mates and fellow jedi add to our own visibility, we effectively cannot form groups until we're strong enough to fight off Bounty Hunters, which is fairly late in the game. I think Jedi may just be getting a bit rarer in our future.

im not saying that i dont think there are too many jedi, but this is a game, people are meant to have fun, and blocking certain elements from newer players would be unfair, there should always be a way to get jedi, but the current way is too easy. i like mrkalador's idea about "the galaxy badge", so that you need to have played for a while before even being able to get started, its possible to get glowy in 3 days and thats too soon. existing jedi also have things to think about, when they leave the game, many pass on or sell accounts, this keeps the number up, and we are left with too many, in extreme cases complete nubs end up with jedi knight accounts. for the problem to be fixed, it needs action by both soe and the players
