Greetings all, this is my first time in the Village, and, though I've read many of the guides here, I have a quick question.
Okay, I have no free unlocks or anything of that sort. Do I need to convert and spending the 50k FS xp to train Combat Novice first, THEN take a quest to unlock a branch, or do I simply take the quest, and, upon completion, I get the Novice box as well?
Thank you very much, and may the Force be with you.

Gotta unlock the branch, and then you'll have to spend 50k FS XP to train Novice of that tree. If you've unlocked a second branch of the tree and you've already trained novice, you won't, of course, have to train it again and you can move on to the tier 1 skill.

So quest to unlock first, then I have 5 boxes to fill, basically, for the first time around in that tree. Thanks very much!

Yup, that's pretty much correct. In order to complete a single branch, you need to complete all four tiers of it, but you need to factor in the Novice box the first time, too.
Best to think of it in terms of XP and not boxes. You need a total of 1,275,000 FS XP to train an entire branch, or 1,225,000 without the Novice box.
