Hello, Im a new player to SWG. I've done a good bit of reading, and searching various web resources about the path to FS and Jedi proffesion. Im just a bit unclear about a few things. If anyone would mind clearing me up on these or dropping any sage like advice my way Id appreciate it.

Your starting profession. How much does it matter, are you going to be using these skills as well once you get to wherever you wanna be in the FS/Jedi paths? Is the Marksman-come-Jedi the same as a the Brawler-come-Jedi ? Are your skills from first proffession usefull, not usefull, or complety unuseable? I have seen some listings of Jedi Templates, but they only ever mention their actual FS/Jedi trees only once did anyone mention "2 boxes of Brawler".

Now I haven't started yet but off the top of my head Im leaning towards the Dark side. I mean, its nothing personal or anything, I just think they have a better retirement plan whereas based on Darth Maul we can tell the Light Side has dental plans down pat. Is there anything I need to know about this? I feel like 99% of the info I see pertains mostly to Light side. Or do they both share exact same trees to choose from for skills so its just a flat out personal preference thing when choosing?

Thanks in advance, back to scouring forums and info pages,

Morden

First off - welcome to SWG! As stated earlier, FS is a long road and were I you, I would enjoy the game for what's in it before I started off driving for FS. In order to even get "glowy" you'll have to play through a lot of the content already in the game and there are differences of opinion on what template is best to achieve and pass through each piece of it.

The FS path is more geared toward combat professions so pick one that you enjoy. I started as Marksman / Rifleman, but ended up moving to Teras Kasi / Doctor for several reasons, both practial and I just really enjoy them. It was as a TK / Doc that I finished my requirements to become "glowy" and eventually got a visit from the old man.

One thing that has everyone wondering at the moment is the pending combat balance / combat update. Many aren't sure how that may reset or change various profession templates and how that will then impact the ability to leverage those skills to become FS and then move towards Jedi.

But rather than worry yourself over that, go out and find a prof, or several, that you enjoy. Try a number of them and find one or two that suit you. Then go enjoy the game. Visit the waterfalls at Theed, see the Sarlaac pit in the Dune Sea, run the Imperial themepark and meet Vader and eventually the Emperor. Just enjoy the game and as you are doing that, keep in mind what's on the stickys on this forum to know how close you're getting to FS.

Once you get FS - it's a long road to padawan....

I unlocked my jedi after a mind numbingly boring fs grind, all i can say is find a profession you really like while your waiting on becoming glowy (for tips on becoming glowy see the stickies at the top).

Have fun do the various theme parks, these are needed to become glowy, and see the POI's around your galaxt, again these are needed to become glowy.

Once you have met the requirements for being glowy youll get a visit from "the oldman" and he will give you a force crystal (not going into specifics its at the top of the page).

The fs grind is gated so you can only unlock 1 fs branch every 3 weeks and you need to unlock 6 of them to unlock, once you unlock a branch you can start to convert your xp from what ever profession you are into fs xp.

The fs grind is very long and boring so if i was a new player i would play the game, you will get glowy by doing the things which the game offers anyway, and not think about unlocking it will take a while as it is and your probably going to be playing a profession before jedi for a while you are working on becoming force sensitive.

So i would find a profession which you find fun and play with it for a while, get used to pvp as a jedi you will be doing a lot of pvp, and make friends in game you will need them to help while your jedi.

Also before you become jedi its worth reading what is written in the jedi forum, jedi is a very hard profession and it takes a long time to grind up a template which you are happy with.

Hope this helps and good luck

lol welcome to the game dude.. its a good game and im sure u will have hours of injoyment... in my time playing swg i have been pritty much all of the professions.. at your level you need to be glowing, to see ur current fs status /check when it says glowing ur fs, but trust me thats as easy as its going to get... o by the way to get glowing u have to visit lots of poi's and do 6 themeparks e.g. imps nyms jabbas the warran etc...

Once glowing you can goto the village on dath there u need to do a few missions evey three weeks to unlock a colum of fs skills each colum needs 1.3 mill or so of fs xp.. now if u are a master tk you would traid in 900k of unarmed and say 90k combat per max, this would give u 60k of force xp this will take a few hours :S.. u need to max about 25 times to compleate each column this will take days and days and days of constant grinding... and u need to do this 6 TIMES..... it will take u start too finnish 5-6months min to unlock jedi and thats sirriusly hard grindind.

At pressent the best way to grind combat xp which is with commando and grenading.. plus its a fun profession to have to do ur other stuff too so id get master commado as a profession to grind jedi... cupple that with mtk if u want which will give u some better melee stats and once u have unlocked jedi get smuggler and fain death

but remember u will need money in this game so being a combat proffesion only will limit what money u can get too doing missions or rare looting... its not easy beeing new i sergest that you get in with a guild and they can teach u eveything you need to know about living in the swg world .. how to make money what weapons or proffesion templates are good.... Dont expect too keep the same profession all the time you play.. Im forever changing my template.. just a few weeks ago i was full melee master Sword master fencer master brawler with some pike.. now im just a sword master with some commando .. :S lol

To gett xp really fast and grind a master within 3 days easy u need to have a nice set of compasit armor, brandy drink, canapa food and a good weapons and a few crates of powerups... depending on proffesion.... these items will cost u about 300k or so if u can get in a guild they will help u out most likly with cheeper stuff most have there own crafters Say u where grinding swordsman soon as you get spin attacks just hit the lair all the creatures around them will die giving u lots of xp really fast... o and dont forget to get buffed ALL THE TIME 12k avg buf cost lasts about 3.5 hours

few. i typed alot :Slol hope this helps sorry bout spelling any questions ? if u need help or an old suit of armor contact me ingame dirtyharryuk

Well, first, welcome aboard the Good Ship SWG!

The best rule-of-thumb anyone can suggest to you is have fun on your journey to whatever goal you set for yourself. And there's a great deal of fun to be had on every step of the journey.

And in that light, there's not really a "best" template or profession. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, its purposes and its holes. The goal on your choice of profession is doing what you enjoy.

The way the skills work in terms of the whole Jedi/FS thing, is that players build themselves up as normal professions, and then gradually bleed off skills to free up skill points for their Force-Sensitive/Jedi careers, until by the time you reach Jedi Knight, you've invested almost all your skill points into Jedi/Force-Sensitive skills. The thing is, you'll have a long, enjoyable career in your conventional skill set while you pursue the Jedi thing. And some people find that they enjoy their conventional profession so much, they're content to stick with it or perhaps just add some Force-Sensitive enhancements on top of it and leave it at that.

As for any differences between Light Jedi and Dark Jedi, there aren't really any in the skills themselves. All Jedi have access to the same five professions: Lightsaber, Enhancer, Force Powers, Force Defender, and Force Healer. The difference only arises when Knights begin climbing up the "Force Ranking System." As they rise from Knight to Master, they become more efficient in their use of the Force for the exercise of their powers. The difference is that Light Jedi gain an advantage in how much Force they expend for Force Healing, while Dark Jedi become more efficient in Force expenditures when using Force Powers -- the stuff like lightning attacks and Force Choke.

Have fun, and may the Force be with you. And if you're looking for a good server for Imperial-leaning players, check out Bria.

Wow thanks a BUNCH! Thats exactly what I needed to know, the bleeding off etc. Thanks for the clear explanation of LightvsDark too. As luck would have it I decided I needed a decent population and Bria was one of 2 to choose from so there I am already hehe. I've been shooting vermin outside of Mos Eisley en mass. Thank you all for your help. It is much appreciated.

There are basically two ways to go about it. The first way is to get the professions that will make it the easiest to grind. (commando, doc, tkm). There are countless threads and suggestions on how to do that, so I'm not really going to go into it here. Besides, I just find doing it that way boring.

I've always played this game as a "character." As such, I chose professions based on what I would actually enjoy playing. I'm biased, but as others have suggested, I would suggest you do the same. Find professions that are the most fun for you, and enjoy the ride as you're becoming force sensitive.

Depending on how often you get to play, I'd suggest as the first steps...play around and grind up a full template of your choice. While you're doing that, socialize, make friends, and join a guild that wants the same things from a game that you want. Being part of a guild not only makes the game more fun, but you'll find that having friends will be very valuable when you have to do some of the quests. They'll not only be able to help you out, but simply give you the information that you need and answer any questions you may have about the path to Jedi. While getting into your guild and building up your template, visit POI's and do some themeparks to experience some of the content. I would suggest doing all of this for at least 2 or 3 months just to get into the game. After that, you'll probably be ready to start on the FS path.

As others said, you basically 'bleed off' your regular template as you acquire new FS (and later Jedi) skills. The forums seem to have so many posts about how to complete things as quickly as possible. But, like I said, I'm biased. I say, enjoy the ride. Pick the professions you want so that if you get burnt out on grinding on any particular weekend, you can still use your regular skills to do the things you like to do. And, quite frankly, if you have a template that you really enjoy, you probably *won't* get burnt out on grinding.

Granted, I'm doing the unconventional thing and gaining 12 boxes of FS simply through dancing because that's what I enjoy. My grind is much slower than most. But, I can honestly say I have never once gotten bored, wanted to give up, or felt overwhelmed by the amount of grinding that is required. I think it's worth it to enjoy the game on the way to your ultimate Jedi goal. Not only will you be having fun, but you'll be having fun for a lot longer than the people who join the game and work up to a complete Jedi template within the span of 6 to 12 months, get bored, and quit without experiencing all the subtleties that this game has to offer.
