I read about the melee defense being bugged. I have 6 trees open right now though. If I grind out another FS tree,
after I become initiate can I drop that tree and pick up melee defense? As long as I have 24 FS boxes at any given time?
Like I fill 7 trees (28 boxes), then I drop one tree later, so I have 24 boxes. Can I do that?

It is my understanding that you have to maintain 6 complete branches, not 24 boxes.
IE, before you can drop FS, you have to complete the seventh branch to drop the one you don't want anymore.
Also, I am not certain that you don't have to do the quests to achieve this. There are other threads that discuss this in more detail.
