I'm not really sure how it works... Does one become Initiate before Padawan? I'm asking because I don't want to completely change my character... I am wondering if I could keep master swords and be able to pull out a lightsaber, or use low level force powers.

Initiate and Padawan don't take SP ... well, except the 24 FS skills you need in the first place. Until a point in the Jedi grind, probably ALL Jedi keep a good combat profession handy.

You can use your light saber and have Swords defenses (Not many) as long as you don't wear any armor..
I would recommend once you get the XP needed for all 24 boxes you go TKM/Fencer Defenses and rest into medic.
At least get Meditate for wounds and fencer for defenses and rest into swords/medic. Once you start to use a saber you can not wear any armor/psgs.

I don't want it for grinding or useful purposes, just for roleplaying aspects.
So, does each jedi tree resemble a normal skill tree? Or is it all free?

you have to use skill points for all the jedi skills once you reach padawan. novice boxes cost 8 sp, the 1st boxes cost 8 sp, 2nd cost 6, 3rd cost 4, 4th cost 2 and the master boxes cost 1

Ohh, ok, thanks. I shall now indulge myself in the magnificent fun that is grinding. This should take a while.
