Maybe a stupid question, but did you talk to the village elder prior to talking to sarguillo?

To answer your question, no I haven't talked to ANY village elder.

yeah Rohak (or is it Rohan?) is the ONLY npc in the village who will talk to me

Something like that, but i forget his exact name (it's listed in the stickies somewhere). Anyway, this was my first trip to the village and I had to talk to him before Sarguillo. The village elder asked what kind of skills i was interested in, then he told me to go see sarguillo.
