you get the choice during the Jedi Knight Trials. Before then, you can be Imp or Reb or Neutral without issue. Once you do the Knight trials, about 8 missions in, you get the choice, and that's where you become a Jedi or a Dark Jedi. However, you're not made perma overt until you complete all the trials.

When can you decide to turn dark or light when you get glowy?
