I have read that the current phase of the village will shift soon. I am about to complete a particular quest to open one of the branches.
My question is, do i have to complete the 4 levels of this branch before i do a quest from the next phase? Or can i open all the branches by doing quests, then grind all the necessary XP?

Firstly - always check the stickies above. This forum is particularly well informed.But for your immediate benefit.....You don't need to grind any FS xp while you are unlocking. You can unlock all 6 branches through the quests before you even start the grind. It helps if you can manage to grind the branch before the phase shifts but it isn't a requirement to unlock the next branch whe the next phase rolls round.
I unlocked my first 3 branchesbefore filling a single box.
Obviously if you DO wish to train a box you WILL need to have unlocked that particular line.

You can open all the branches and then take as long as you want grinding all the xp
