I'd say stay melee. You've got a pretty popular template, tho most who have doc go to 4/0/0/0 that I have read.
I used to cap 1.2 mill rifles xp, 900k pistols, and 900k combat with C12 grenades. It went really quick. I also did a sense tree with scout 4x4x, hunting things close to the village (that was not so quick, but doable).
Once you unlock, melee skills are not so important anymore, but rifleman will save your skin since you will still be doing high damage with it, as well as use jedi healing skills and defences. TKA innate armour only works when you are unarmed I believe, and you don't want to be unarmed when you get to jedi (it does not stack with jedi innate armour).

It's equpped armor with which tk innate armor does not function.Interesting thoughts on ranged, but I don't see how melee profession mods don't help as a padiwan... once you've got a light sabre, you're more or less a melee combatant, no?
Once you first get your lightsaber, you do about 50 base DPS. Even with great melee skills, you will have a lot of trouble fighting BH with your lightsaber (and you will be rooted too). I kept master rifleman, and I still have 700+ modded DPS on my rifle. That may be less than the BH has, but I have far superior healing skills and defence tools.
It takes ages to get good damage with a lightsaber, you need at least 2 full trees. That's 6020000 jedi xp. That means killing 6020 bols, or aproximately 375 lairs in a group of 8 with inspiration buff. And you need to train in defence and healing anyways first, otherwise you'll die and lose more xp from BH than what you manage to grind. Most padawans I see dying from BH while starting their grind are the ones without ranged weapons skills.

So you can still stay with your template and use range weapon for grinding. Of course you won't have as much dmg/speed/range defense as if you were master of a range profession. But in group hunting, that doesn't really matter.
And about nades, C-12 don't require commando skills.
So my suggestion is if you want to use range weapon for grinding, then just use it and stay with your current template. Yu can use melee skills for all other combat, like missions and quests.
That wouldn't really work. Yes as a CL80 you can pretty much equip the best rifle in the game and do decent damage. But without any Rifleman skills you'd cap Rifle XP very quickly, maybe at most 75k which is absolutely worthless when trying to grind village.
