Thread: Need advice... Should I respec to ranged for the FS xp grind?

I'm currently Master TK /Master Swordsman / Doctor 2-0-0-0. This gives me good defenses (innate armor), good damage (329 base DPS powerhammer), and decent healing ability. I need to keep some doc for getting medical xp for the Phase 3 sense quest. But I'm hearing that ranged is a better template to grinding FS xp, and that it builds a lot faster. Is this true? I have a master armorsmith alt that can make really good armor, so I suppose I could drop TK. I wouldnt be able to wear all my bio-engineered clothing, but melee/ranged defense never seem to do anything anyway. What would you all suggest? Any help here would really be appreciated, as I believe I can only respec for a day or so more. Thanks.

Ranged is arguably 'better' for grinding xp because they can snare and 'kite' mobs while they ae attack, all out of the mobs' attack range, but...

If you are going to continue past unlock on the jedi path, you'll be melee eventually, so if you change to ranged now, you'll just have to change back at some point.

If you want to grind xp asap as melee, you're going to have to get in groups and kill lots. You can also grind regular missions solo and still get xp at an arguably acceptable rate.

I was pure ranged before cu on my combat character, but with loss of weapons and armor and no money to reequip those things....and with the fact that with 13 fs boxes at the time (now 16), I knew the time I would have to switch to melee was in the near future. So, I am now mbrawl/tkm/mpike/medic0230.

I'd say stay melee. You've got a pretty popular template, tho most who have doc go to 4/0/0/0 that I have read.

Wish I could, but my FS skills are taking up some of my skill points, got 2 trees full so far (8 skill points), and somehow have to make room for another 16 points. /shudder. Which now that I think of it has me considering dropping TK since I have my armorsmith back, and going master doc, which should give me more than 16 skillpoints to spend for FS. Hmm... Thanks for the input btw.

I would recommend going for ranged. I was MBH /MRM when grinding FS, and it was really nice to get lots of xp. You get 64m range, which means you don't need to run around after each target when in a group. The only thing is that I was outdamaging everyone in the groups I was in, so I was basically the tank because the mobs go for the one doing highest damage (I had 824 modded dps).

I used to cap 1.2 mill rifles xp, 900k pistols, and 900k combat with C12 grenades. It went really quick. I also did a sense tree with scout 4x4x, hunting things close to the village (that was not so quick, but doable).

Once you unlock, melee skills are not so important anymore, but rifleman will save your skin since you will still be doing high damage with it, as well as use jedi healing skills and defences. TKA innate armour only works when you are unarmed I believe, and you don't want to be unarmed when you get to jedi (it does not stack with jedi innate armour).

"TKA innate armour only works when you are unarmed"

Not true with non-light saber weapons. Works fine with pikes I know for a fact. It's equpped armorwith whichtk innate armor does not function.

Interesting thoughts on ranged, but I don't see how melee profession mods don't help as a padiwan... once you've got a light sabre, you're more or less a melee combatant, no?

Once you first get your lightsaber, you do about 50 base DPS. Even with great melee skills, you will have a lot of trouble fighting BH with your lightsaber (and you will be rooted too). I kept master rifleman, and I still have 700+ modded DPS on my rifle. That may be less than the BH has, but I have far superior healing skills and defence tools.

It takes ages to get good damage with a lightsaber, you need at least 2 full trees. That's 6020000 jedi xp. That means killing 6020 bols, or aproximately 375 lairs in a group of 8 with inspiration buff. And you need to train in defence and healing anyways first, otherwise you'll die and lose more xp from BH than what you manage to grind. Most padawans I see dying from BH while starting their grind are the ones without ranged weapons skills.

So you can still stay with your template and use range weapon for grinding. Of course you won't have as much dmg/speed/range defense as if you were master of a range profession. But in group hunting, that doesn't really matter.

And about nades, C-12 don't require commando skills.

So my suggestion is if you want to use range weapon for grinding, then just use it and stay with your current template. Yu can use melee skills for all other combat, like missions and quests.

That wouldn't really work. Yes as a CL80 you can pretty much equip the best rifle in the game and do decent damage. But without any Rifleman skills you'd cap Rifle XP very quickly, maybe at most 75k which is absolutely worthless when trying to grind village.
