I'm sure some variation of this has been asked in the past, and I'm too lazy to search and read everything that the horrible search engine will dredge up from before the village anyway.
With the CU looming over us all, I'm not going to be able to keep my template of Smuggler/TK/pistoleer and will probably drop pistoleer altogether, so I thought to myself, 'Self, why not get at leat some of the FS quests out of the way?'
I have no intention of making my main char a Jedi, he is and always will be a smuggler. But I can ,of course, use him to open my second slot and then make a Jedi char with my alt.
My question to you who are experienced is this:
If I'm just using my main as a means to an end, does it even matter which 6 FS trees I unlock and grind to reach the trials? I'll be promptly dumping all FS stuff once I open slot 2 unless I can come up with some kind of template that enhances smuggler/TK, and of course I'll do things the right way when I run through it all with my alt.
Any and all input is appreciated.

It shouldn't matter what unlocks you take if only doing it to get to the 2nd char. Of course it would be beneficial to take ones that will enhance what your char already has, but that depends on if you want to wait out extra phases to get exactly what you want or not. And as far as I understand it, you won't be able to drop any of the FS stuff once you make padawan. Believe you have to keep 6 branches. I'm at initiate, just 4 trials away from padawan, so can't say for sure, and I'm surely not planning to test it.

that's the way it's looking, I'll be stuck with FS skills that, even though they SEEM complimentary, are in reality almost useless. The melee speed won't affect me since master TK will cap my unarmed speed (accuracy too I think.) Ranged and melee defense will help some though. I'd probably also go with vehicular control and luck just to make 6, both of which are debatibly useless but would fit in with the character's persona and history.
Based on the proposed info for the CU and combat profession prerequisites, I'd still have 28 SP left to spend (assuming that SP requirements aren't thrown all out of whack by the CU, all they mention is bringing them more into balance.) Character wise, I think I could spend those 28 on Lightsaber 0400 (2 handed lightsaber) just to give that little bit of pizazz in combat and add to my history that I'm a failed padawan who ended up a smuggler.Message Edited by Duskrider on 03-26-2005 08:32 PM

They could have fixed this in the last 4 months that I was gone but if they did not, there is no way to drop padawan. You are basically stuck spending those 24 points forever. If that is how you want to do then cool. Isnt there a charm or some sort of line in fs, oh yes persuasion. I think that would be a must for a smuggler.

honestly, you would be better off just making your main a jedi, and making your alt a smuggler. I know how it is, your character has sentimental value to you as a smuggler, as does mine. But once you go through the FS grind you WILL NOT want to do it again. I am just about to finish and there is no way I would even consider doing it again unless I was getting hella paid. So if you really want a jedi, that is my best recommendation to you. You can easily pick up smuggler with your alt. I know, its not the same, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and make a sacrifice if jedi is really what you want. Besides, having a lightsaber wielding smuggler would be neat, but you would really get sick of being killed by BHs and gank squads all the time. Especially once they realize that you are realitively easy prey. At least with jedi you eventually get strong enough to take a BH 1 on 1. But with a smuggler template with just tkm, good luck. Not saying its impossible but it will be a rough career path.

It's a matter of principle, it's not just sentimental value. From launch, my main was created to be a smuggler, I'm an oldschool RPer and when I create a character I don't change it lightly. With the CURB coming, he won't be much of a combat char anyway thanks to the prerequisite changes, unless I were to drop smuggler and make him pure combat. The saber wielding won't really be for combat anyway, just to add a little 'character' to my character in an RP sense. I do appreciate your advice, but it's much easier said than done for me. Not to mention that I have a great customer base for slicing, and while I could redirect them all to my alt, it's just not the same.

You are going through an awful lot for the sake of RP. While as a fellow RPer I commend you for it, as a fellow human being I tell you to save your sanity!
At least entertain the idea of taking the shortest path between two points! Just seems like a lot to go through. But again, I commend you for it, that's a loooot of grinding to go through for RP purposes...hope you make it out with your thought processes intact.
