I know when you first talk to him, he ask you if you want to shut the shields down or capture the commander.
I can't remember which one i was going to do. I tried to look in my journal to see if it says but it just says capture the commander and gives a brief discription of what you have to do( does not say which part to do but details everypart). I was wondering if it really matters and if it does, how do you tell which mission is yours?

It appears that you can do the quest in a group and do either task as long as you do one of them and your partner does the other. Also, you can just talk to the captain again and change what task youd like to do.

it honestly doesnt matter which one you took.
in order to get the reward, you have to either take down the shield or escort the commander.
Me and my brother accepted different things, he accepted shields, i took commander.
But it didnt work out that way, i took down the shields and he escorted the commander, and we both got the reward
the mission doesnt have to be precise, you just need to do one part.

Another tip that i haven't heard mentioned yet, and doesn't appear to be common knowledge (i didn't know when i started): If you are doing the mission grouped with a partner, and you take down the shields, that automatically means that your partner is the only person who can capture the commander. If another group comes through and tries to steal your commander, they wont be able to.
Looks like in this case the devs did us a huge favor when designing the quest this way. Saves alot of anxiety and grief knowing that you cant be raked by a party crasher. Of course this also means that it's critically important you or your partner be the one to drop the sheild. At that instant you will either own the quest, or be back in line waiting another 2 hours.
