I did not get back none of the combat xp I put into the tree. Is that normal? I have given up professions in the past but did not pay attention to wether I got back my xp. Please let me know.

You mean the xp you used to train the skills?
you never get back the xp you use to train anything..
you used it to pay for the skill, and if you surrender the skill its your choise and no, you dont get it back

Once you train in the box, you use that exp to acquire the box. When you give it up you will not get it back. what you are seeing is the amount of banked exp you had since getting that upper box.
