I've completed the quest solo. If I go and help somebody who hasn't completed the quest and if I bring down the shield and they take back the commander or vise versa, would I get the +900 mind reward?

I believe you both have to had accepted the quest prior to capturing him and tell the captain which of you will either power down the shields or capture the commander.
