Grouping with a friend killing dark troopers, I received so many more holocrons then they did, they actually were considering becoming FS just for the luck tree. I looted8 in one buff, they only received 1.
Luck tree have anything to do with it? Probably not, but it convinced my hunting partner...

I've started this and I dont think I'm doing it right. I found a spot of 50% iron and started to survey. Should I keep surveying until I get a message? When will I know that I've completed Eozlin's task?

yes keep trying you will get a message that your journal has been updated. you dont have to go to the deposite or sample anything.

Do you need to find the 50% deposit on Dath, or can it be another planet?

any planet.
I started at the village then headed towards the outpost. On the way I surveyed for them in order until I got to the outpost. I'd found the first 3. I then hopped the shuttle to coro and found the rest of them right outside coro.
back to dant and done.
Took about an hour tops.
