Actually it is true, with one of my chars I was doing a mission on Dantooine, before CU, was just about to attack the savage quenkers, andsaw something coming towards me on the radar, it was himrunning towards me from the distance! Lucky I saw him first otherwise I could have been engaged in combat for too long and he ran off.
So either:
1) The old man either spawns or comes to from a distance depending on the area or whatever
2) He spawned on me a short distance from the mission, and finally caught up with me
3) The devs changed how The Old Man spawns
On most of my other chars he has just been standing there, as though just spawned, but then not really noticed.
But there was one time, on one of my chars, and I'm not kidding here, I got visited by 2 Old Men!! I was on my swoop when they spawned, and coming towards me from both directions. I didn't know which one to speak to! Spoke to one of them, got my crystal, he ran off, the other one kept following me around, but when I tried speaking to him nothing happened, he just said some standard message, as game knew I'd spoken with the old man, but he still kept following me, then evntually ran off saying "I looked too busy"or something like that. Was worried that I had to wait for old man again, but didn't, carried on as normal. Just a weird bug I guess, but quite funny!

both of my characters met the old man 2 days after going glowy when i used my starship to travel from theed spaceport to the imp outpost on Talus. and both times he was right there inside the outpost waiting for me.

72 hours is standard for the old man, then a further 24 hours for the sith.

You see, the Old Man shows up within a time period that is mostly random within 72 hours. That means sometimes it's 2 hours, sometimes it's 72. Just because he showed up quickly for you doesn't mean that's the rule. Your getting lucky does not mean everyone else's experience is BS, but your saying so implies that you're an @ss.

I hate to be the odd man out but the old man visited me on my server in my home city. I got glowie on Naboo after the Imperial Themepark. I went to my home in Pax Imperia on Coreillia. I was waiting by the shuttleport to go to the C-Net starport and the old man appears. I was also attacked by the first sith in the same manner. I went to Tatooine to buy an item from someone and was attecked at the shuttleport in a player city.

player cities he will come, but he never goes into npc cities

What happenes if you miss your talk with the Old Man, do you just have to wait for another 72 hr period?

LOL, i had both show up exactly on the 24 hr mark. The old man showed up friday night, and the Sith were saturday night.

The Old Man showed up on the 3rd day for me.
I almost missed the Old Man too as I had just logged in and jumped on my speeder when I noticed that he'd spoken to me in my chat box. I hadnt seen him as he was stood down a slope about 20m away...
The Sith then the following day, which was fun because I forgot they were coming and they caught me without armour on... (pants down situation!)

finally came and because i was so happy and relieved that the old man had finally turned up for mei took a break and was making myself something to eat when i heard the battle music .... i ran in to see i was being attacked by the sith already and just managed to quickly heal myself before i was dead..... typical that things like that always happen when your not sat at the computer for ages waiting.
